“Where's the handyman?” Paul asked. “He's late.”

“He'll be here soon,” Sylvester said, as if he weren't sure. “Told him six.”

“Well, if he's not here by six-oh-five, fire his ass. Hire someone else. We need this shit-hole cleaned up ASAP.”

  “Okay, boss.”

“We're opening next month. I don't care what the builders tell us—it will be done.”

  “You got it, boss.”

“The writer's body is inside. Hanging most likely. I mean, shit, I hope so. Either way, make sure the handyman makes the call to 911. That's important. Got it?”

  “Yes, boss.”

  “Repeat it, you imbecile.”

  “Handyman phones the police.”

  “Close enough.”

Paul turned to his car, spotted a figure across the street. The naked woman covered in blood. The woman who'd been following him for the last two weeks. Next to her, Dusty the coach. They stared him on, challenging him. Begging him to make the next move. Or maybe... just maybe they were warning him. Telling him to stop.

  He'd never listen.

“The Family is fronting us the money,” Paul told Sylvester. “That means no screw-ups. You hear?”

  “Yes, boss.”

“Good. Because they'll kill us. No question. We're in deep now. Too deep.” Paul blinked and his friends across the street were gone. Tired, beyond exhausted, he cleared his lungs with a deep sigh. “I need a fucking drink.”
