‘Give her time,’ she said but he just shook his head.
‘I know that Hutchins woman had been treated badly. But not by me. And now I’ve lost my child and my wife.’
‘I know it’s not right, but she believed you hadn’t done enough.’
‘I did everything I could. It wasn’t me that was at fault, it was the system.’
‘I know.’
Jo let him cry a while longer but he stood up as they heard Billy coming back up to the flat.
‘I’m sorry,’ Miller said to her and turned, almost barging past Billy in the doorway.
‘What was that all about?’ Billy asked before correcting himself, ‘no, no, you don’t have to tell me. By the time you get to our age, everyone has a past and I’m not the jealous type.’ And Jo wondered how she had managed to find such a perfect boyfriend, even though a little tiny part of her had registered the fact that Miller was almost certainly now free and she couldn’t deny that her heart beat that little bit faster at the thought.
