It started with Scooby Doo, and carried on through to Trixie Belden (I always preferred her to Nancy Drew -- Trixie felt a little more accessible to me, more willing to dive in and get her hands dirty for the sake of the next clue), old hardback copies of The Power Boys and The Hardy Boys and even Hawaii 5-0... Once I hit puberty, I discovered -- and quickly devoured -- those old Gothic romantic mysteries: Victoria Holt and Daphne DuMaurier, Phyllis Whitney, Emily Bronte... I lived for creepy settings and sexual tension, damsels in distress and the brooding men who saved them. It seemed only natural, then, that I would choose to study and pursue a career as a mystery writer.
