This is a story spanning a gap of 100 years. Catherine has recently married Jack who has good prospects as he is from a well to do family. Over a period of several years circumstances serve to make her life intolerable, accidental deaths of children, accusations, mistreatment by her husband. With no one to provide enough moral support, she becomes sensitive to the slightest remark, causing her mental stability to be doubted. 100 years later Michaela moves into Catherines house, she is ignorant of being a descendent, consequently the stories and rumours alter her behaviour. She is a determined woman but is rattled by the locals comments and their speculation.
