When she 10 years of age Savannah's parents died. After they died, her family left her with her best friend Lucy. Lucy has been with the family for many years. Savannah did not want to worry Lucy so dismissed seeing him. The next morning Savannah goes out to the barn to collect fresh eggs for breakfast. After she enters the barn, she hears a low moan for help. Savannah startled by what she hears slowly looks around to find where it is coming from.Savannah looks behind the bunch of stacked hay and sees a man. She recognizes him from the northern army by what he is wearing. Savannah not sure what to do begins to walk away. Just as she does the man, again moans low please help me and then passes out. Savannah not sure what to do, turns around and goes to the doors, she yells out for Lucy to come to the barn right away.Lucy enters the barn and asks Savannah what is wrong? Savannah then leads Lucy to where the young man is lying wounded. Lucy looks him over and says to Savannah this is a northern soldier and he is badly hurt. Savannah looks down upon him and feels for him. Savannah then says to Lucy " Let's take him into the house and there we can care for him and decide what to do next. After they bring the man to the house ,clean him up and place in him the bed, they go down to the kitchen for tea and to talk about what to do next. Lucy tells Savannah "We must get him out of here before we are caught." Savannah replies, "No we will take care of him and then let him go back to his company." Lucy says'" Are you crazy girl?"Savannah replies with a soft warm smile and says, "I find him interesting and would like to help him." Lucy looks at Savannah and knows that look. Lucy says."
