Reeves smiled tightly as he walked up the stairway leading to the front door of the lavish Hamilton-Bradshaw Estate. Famed almost as much as the Amondshams, the Hamilton-Bradshaw Estate Ball was an event much sought after by the elite of Kenton. Definitely an event any man of ambition would not shy away from. And Bertram Reeves had certainly grown in ambition and relinquished much of his shyness over the last four weeks since he had arrived in Kenton.
He looked forward to meeting his patron, Lord Amondsham, at the ball, as well as Lady Amondsham and the lovely Annabelle, who had undergone his special treatment three times already, each experience as vividly entertaining as the one before. And of course Selene would be there, to look after their noble needs. He did look forward to seeing her again. Selene. His heart beat faster at the mere sound of her name.
“I am in your debt, Doctor.” Munro interrupted his train of thought as they stepped into the lavish ballroom. “I hear you have been treating my fiancée, Lady Belfour, of late.”
“Yes, so I have.” He nodded discreetly. “The seasonal germs in the air have been affecting her recently.”
“These germs must be of a special kind that seem to only afflict the feminine gender.” Munro eyed the young doctor intensely.
“Yes, indeed.” Reeves replied carefully. “And it is fortunate that I am well learned in the art and sciences of what ails the fairer sex.”
“Undeniably, Doctor.” The cavalryman almost sneered. “…if one was to judge by your success over this spurt of illnesses manifesting among the fairer sex in Kenton for the last two weeks.”
“You honor me with your kind praise.” Reeves feigned a smile and turned away as he spotted the Amondsham family among the bevy of guests in the Ballroom. Selene was waving at him from behind them. “And now you must pardon me, Captain, I must pay homage to my patron.”
Munro nodded curtly, his eyes burning with hate, as the young doctor hurried toward those whose company he would prefer over Munro’s at any given moment.
“Oh, Doctor.” Selene called out to him. “It is good to see you again.”
“As it is for me too.” He walked up to her. “I must say, this is a rather lavish occasion.”
“Never mind that, Doctor.” She whispered. “I have word that you may be in some manner of dilemma tonight.”
“What ever do you mean?” His eyes went wide.
“Someone I know has informed me that things have been overheard that have the possibility of harming you.”
“Selene, my dear.” He smiled at her. “The last time you spoke so cryptically to me, my fortunes had quadrupled. Pray now, can you speak more plainly?”
“Well, Bertie.” She smirked. “Your special treatment of one of your special patients has been witnessed by those who should not have.”
“Oh, I see.” Reeves felt a sudden chill run down his back. “And what of it?”
“Word of your prosperity has not gone well with a few here in Kenton.” She went on, leading him away from the rest. “And some among them seek to have you removed and even punished.”
“What has Lord Amondsham have to say?” He glanced over at the large man conversing with others of his station.
“He is yet to know.” She drew his attention back to her.
“I see, and I have been invited here to attend my own tribunal, so to speak.” He gave her a wry smile.
“You may still flee.” She jerked her head toward the exit.
“Not without having the honor of defending my name.” He sniffed, suppressing the urge to reach out and touch her.
“Do not be a fool, Doctor.” She whispered sharply.
“I have worked hard for everything I have now; I will not surrender them for a few envious fools.” He whispered back. Oh, she was so close and yet so far. “Tell me what more do you know, so I may formulate a refutation were I to be accosted this night.”
“There’s word of your wonderfulness being witnessed in action, and then the rumor mongers have embellished the rest.”
“Strange.” He raised an eyebrow sharply. “So what have I to do now?”
“Listen to me closely, Doctor.” She whispered, drawing him close. She spoke extensively into his ear, leaving him bemused and smiling.
“Are you sure you are just a maid, dear Selene.” His smile was honest.
“By now you should know better, Doctor.” She smiled back sweetly, making his heart leap. “Oh, look. Lord and Lady Amondsham and Annabelle, they beckon to you.”
Reeves turned to face the Amondshams as Selene hurried away to her designated chores.
“My Lord and Ladies.” Reeves turned toward the Amondsham family as they approached him.
“Ah, Reeves, my good man.” Amondsham placed his burly hand on the doctor’s narrow shoulder, almost weighing him down. “It does my heart good to know of your accomplishment.”
“I must bequeath all credit to your kindness, my lord.” Reeves smiled, bowing his head. “My ladies.”
“Oh, Doctor Reeves, we are indebted to you for taking care of our dear Annabelle in these times of strange diseases among the young women.” Lady Amondsham said worriedly even as Annabelle gave him a wide eyed mischievous smile. “We fear there might be an epidemic…”
“Ah, My Lady, rest your fears.” Reeves clasped his slender hands together. “It is a passing change in the weather, a minor anomaly in the air… nothing that my learning cannot overcome.”
“And you have proven your worth time and again, dear boy.” Amondsham patted him on the back. “Now come, the fabled Hamilton-Bradshaw feast awaits us.”
Reeves was impressed by the opulence around him. He was getting quite accustomed to such excesses. This was a life he certainly wanted and was sure that he was now well and truly set upon. Nothing, if anything at all, could go wrong. Could it?
He wished Selene would be at the table by side. She had hurried outside where the rest of the help had assembled awaiting their master’s requirements. Reeves had hoped to spend time with her again, but no matter, there would be time enough after the evening’s pleasantries. He turned his attention to the splendid spread of food and drink as everyone took their places.
“We are honored to have every noteworthy citizen of Kenton Town attending here this fine night.” A tall man announced, looking around at the gathering. “May I present her ladyship, host to this night’s festivities, Lady Hamilton-Bradshaw?”
Everyone rose as a stately woman, of around fifty years, walked in from a private entrance. She approached the head of the table and bowed slightly.
“I thank you all for attending this night.” She announced. “Tonight we celebrate the two hundredth year of the Hamilton-Bradshaw Estate’s continuation here in Kenton Town.”
A few raised their wine cups and some clapped softly. Reeves looked around the room. While the Amondshams raised their cups, Munro and Lady Gwendolyn clapped their hands in approval.
“And we also take this opportunity to welcome and give praise to the newest member in our esteemed society, Doctor Bertram Edgar Reeves.” The woman fondly looked at the young doctor. “Kenton Town is in your debt for such exemplary service in such short a time.”
This time the clapping was louder and more cups of wine were raised up high. Reeves could feel the heat of the color flushing his cheeks. He looked around, pride and embarrassment mingled on his expression. Everyone, except Captain Munro, seemed genuinely impressed. But he didn’t pay much attention to that, the man was always envious, from the moment they met. Reeves let the joy of basking in such glory take over his senses.
“And I must take a share of the credit.” Amondsham rose up, holding his wine cup high. “If not for that opportune night, young Doctor Reeve here would be struggling away by the marketplace… and I would have been surely dead.”
“Indeed, Lord Amondsham.” Lady Hamilton-Bradshaw acknowledged. “That is now part legend, in the history of our fair town.”
“Let us hear of it again, from the young man himself.” Ano
ther of the guests, Reeves recognized as Herman Bradley, Lord of the Bradley Estate, called out.
“Yes, indeed.” The hostess urged. “Regale us with your tale, good doctor. You may not get such an opportune moment and this illustrious gathering again too soon.”
“It is my honor, my Lords and Ladies.” Bertram Reeves stood up and bowed. “To be given such opportunity so I may have my years of learning bear fruit.”
The clapping intensified and Reeves waited for it to subside. Smiling broadly, he narrated the events of the last month. Expressing every detail with clinical precision, he stressed much importance in the study he had undergone for five years before embarking upon a journey to find his fortune.
“But nothing had prepared me for what happened when I arrived here in Kenton precisely a month ago to the day.” He orated like an expert storyteller, part of him that reveled in lecturing and imparting knowledge manifesting over him. “Merely two days after my arrival and trying to settle into a life here, and on a night the skies relentlessly assailed the streets, brave Styrice and his horse Corbin escorted me to the Amondsham Estate. There I found the master of the house, stricken by an ailment most foul – the infectious discharge of a badger. A grave condition, no doubt, yet nothing of importance for my expertise and skill.”
He paused and looked around. Everyone had a look of expectancy on their faces, waiting for him to continue. He smiled and took a sip of wine. It was certainly good t o be the center of attention. He continued.
“Aye, a condition most foul, and yet curable within a night. His lordship recovered well by the next day and bestowed upon me all that you see today. Had it not been for his patronage, I would not be standing before you today. Had he merely paid my fee and dismissed me, I would not be here basking in the glory of this honor.”
“Well deserved indeed.” Munro cried out, making everyone turn toward him. “Such honor, as generous as it is, is far too less for your accomplishment, Doctor Reeves.”
“You are most kind, Captain Munro.” Reeves replied, eyeing the man suspiciously.
“Far too less than you deserve, I’m sure.” The arrogant young man continued. “Regale us further, my good man… educate us of lesser knowledge about your rather recent successes with this rash of illnesses among the eligible young ladies of Kenton.”
“Ah, Captain Munro.” Reeves smiled; a sliver of uneasiness in his voice. “I do believe I have given you a report on such a passing anomaly in the air.”
“An anomaly that inflicts only the young women of this town?” Munro’s voice dripped with venom.
“Indeed, Captain. So you are quite safe.” Reeves replied with a grin, nodding to the soft rumble of laughter that followed from the gathering.
“Thank you, Doctor. Yet I do find the recurrence of this affliction not as amusing as you.” Munro said coldly. “What makes your patients for this particular disease relapse into it again and again is beyond my understanding.”
“That is why I am the doctor, Captain.” Reeves responded stiffly. “Treatment is often needed in stages.”
“Stages of private moments between you and your nubile patients.” Munro gritted his teeth. “Including my own fiancée.”
“Yes, Captain.” Reeves took a deep breath. “Lady Belfour was in dire need of medical care as much as the other young ladies and everyone else who I have had the privilege of serving.”
“On the contrary, Doctor.” The cavalryman sneered. “Your care was hardly of medical nature.”
“What are you proposing, Captain?” Reeves kept his voice calm, though his insides clenched.
“That you, Doctor Reeves, have been taking far too any liberties with the impressionable young women of Kenton.” The cavalry man stood up and pointed his finger directly at Reeves with purpose.
“Be wary, Captain Munro.” Amondsham sat upright. “The charge you are making is most grave and the consequences of such are graver still.”
“I have the necessary attestation, my Lord.” Munro said triumphantly. “And you would be grateful for it, as Lady Annabelle, my cousin and your own daughter, has been under the recurring care of this charlatan.”
“Captain Munro, you do know the reprisal for this bold allegation against an honored member of society if it happens to be falsified.” Lady Hamilton-Bradshaw demanded of him. “And we will not bring umbrage upon the ladies in question to prove your baseless assumptions.”
“Hardly baseless and more than assumptions, my lady.” Munro bowed. “And no lady of Kenton need be required to testify her innocence… it is the doctor here whom I call upon trial for misconduct of duty and breach of faith.”
“We should have a formal hearing of these charges in the manner they require.” Amondsham stated. “This occasion is hardly the place for holding a tribunal.”
“But this is the perfect place, Uncle Samuel.” Munro grinned. “This concerns every citizen of good standing in Kenton and we are all present here this night.”
“I am in agreement with the Captain on this, Lord Amondsham.” Lady Hamilton-Bradshaw nodded. “A pity it does dampen the spirit of the occasion, yet the allegations made on Doctor Reeves is of the utmost importance and need immediate attention.”
“Oh, this is a load of rubbish.” Annabelle cried out. “Jackson, you have lost your mind… and it is a known fact that you have never given Doctor Reeves the respect he has so earned.”
“My dear cousin, I see that he has been quite successful in deluding you as much as every other eligible woman in Kenton.” Munro snorted, placing his hands firmly on his hips.
“I was ill and Doctor Reeves was responsible for my care… that is all.” The pretty blonde almost shouted. “Jackson, I will no longer consider you a member of my family.”
“Hush, child.” Amondsham rebuked his daughter. “Captain Munro, the charge you make requires substantiation.”
“I have here with me the housekeeper of the Waldenshire Estate who has vividly witnessed the Doctor’s special treatment of this uncommon disease that has spread amongst the young ladies of Kenton.” The cavalry man stood up and waved at some of the people standing by the service entrance. “Come in, Mrs. Moore. Come in and do tell everyone what you have told me.”
“Once again, I protest. This is not the time or place for such…” Amondsham gnashed his teeth.
“My Lord, I have no objection to this.’ Reeves interrupted. “I have nothing to fear of the Captain’s effort to tarnish my name and hard earned reputation.”
“You are a brave man, Doctor.” Munro grinned malevolently. “We shall see how your reputation fares after this.”
Reeves grimly listened to the housekeeper narrate what she had overheard. He remembered the incident, it wasn’t too long ago. The third daughter of the Waldenshire Family, an eighteen year old beauty. She enjoyed his treatment in a more boisterous manner than any other before, including her elder sisters. The young doctor was amazed at the housekeeper’s explicit descriptions of what she had heard, obviously from eavesdropping outside the door. Only one incapable of understanding would not judge from her detailed words that what was transpiring that night had nothing to do with medicine, though everything to do with the human body.
“I have heard enough.” Lady Hamilton-Bradshaw raised her hand to silence the speaker. “Thank you, Madam, for your time. You may leave us.”
“By this attestation, Captain Munro, do you wish to imply that those of who have availed Doctor Reeves’ services are hiding the fact that they have been partaking in immoral acts with him.” The stately woman looked down at the handsome cavalryman. “Including your own bride-to-be, Lady Gwendolyn, as well as your cousin, Lady Annabelle.”
“Yes, I do.” He nodded, ignoring the gasps all around.
“You would take the word of a hired help over my daughter and the young Lady Belfour?” Amondsham exploded. “Preposterous, Captain Munro, most preposterous.”
“My Lord.” Munro smiled confidently. “Reeves is a man skilled in the arts beyon
d our reckoning. His practices often call for potions and such that delude the mind to bear pain. He would have certainly used such hallucinogenic properties on his hapless victims.”
“Captain Munro, you tread on dangerous waters.” Amondsham warned the man. “Doctor Reeves will be given the opportunity to clear his name and should he succeed, you shall bear the full brunt of this act of duplicity.”
“I am confident, My Lord.” Munro bowed. “My experience with my fiancée confirms my belief that she has been compromised by his visits to cure her so called illness.”
“I daresay, Jackson.” Gwendolyn stood up, her face as red as her glowing tresses. “You have gone too far.”
