Frowning, I shot Andy a glance. “Our what, now?”
His gaze darted away. “Um…”
Jeremy slapped his hands on the table. “You haven’t even talked about it? What the fuck, Andy?”
Celeste coughed politely. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to ruin the surprise. Andy’s just been talking about marriage so much, I assumed you two had discussed it.”
Marriage? If there was anyone on the planet I’d want to marry, it was Andy. I just hadn’t thought – hadn’t dared to hope – he’d want that, too.
I was only a fuck-up, after all. A degenerate. No self-respecting man would want to commit his life to me.
“Well, now you know.” Andy turned sheepishly to me. “It’s been on my mind, that’s all. It’s not like I was going to propose or anything.”
“No?” I asked, my heart racing faster and faster. “That’s a shame. I mean… maybe you should.”
He stared at me. “What do you mean? Are you saying…”
My cheeks went hot. “I’d say yes.”
“Then fuck it.” He jumped out of his chair and knelt on the floor, causing half the other patrons in the restaurant to stare at him. “I thought I’d wait until I got a ring, but now I think I better do this before you change your mind.”
My hands flew up to cover my mouth. He couldn’t seriously be doing this. Not here, not now. Not with me.
He deserved someone better… didn’t he? Except he’d looked all over, and he hadn’t found anyone like that. Against all odds, I was the one he wanted.
And I wanted him, too. More than anything in the world.
“Tyler Bernhardt, I love you,” he said quietly. “My feelings may have started with hatred and distrust, but they turned into a love that grows every day. You light me up. You give me life. And you do it all without even trying. You are the one I’ve spent my life hoping for, and I would be honored beyond belief if you’d agree to spend the rest of your life with me.”
My eyes filled. He sounded so passionate, so sincere. His spontaneous words were the most romantic thing I’d ever heard.
My head was spinning so much I couldn’t even form words. All I could do was nod.
“Is that a yes, Tyler?” He took my hand, staring deeply into my eyes.
“Yes,” I managed. Tears rolled down my cheeks, making the sight of his perfect face blur. “Of course, Andy. Yes!”
“Oh my God,” Celeste whispered, reminding me that other people were around. “I can’t believe this is happening! I can’t believe we got to see this!”
I lifted my eyes to see the waitress standing behind him, her tray loaded with each of our meals. “Congratulations,” she said with a grin as she set down our food. “This one’s on the house.”
As she moved away, Laney dashed up to the table and sat down. “Sorry I’m late! Wait, why are you crying? What’d I miss?”
“Nothing much,” I said. “Just that the most incredible man in the world wants to marry me. That’s all.”
I took Andy’s hand and held it to my heart.
I still half-expected him to come to his senses one day… but as long as he didn’t, I was going to make him my husband.
I wanted him to be mine. Forever.
