Teacher in Heat

  “Then let me know you.”

And Dale’s blood ran hot and cold at the same time. In that moment, it felt as though he could glimpse into the future: Greg and himself curled up in his bed, Greg visiting his office, Dale treating Greg to lunch. Greg’s scent lingering on his skin, marking Dale as his. And somehow, someone would recognize it.

“I won’t tell,” Greg said. He pressed kisses up Dale’s neck, and buried his nose in Dale’s hair. “I promise.”

Dale’s throat tightened. No one had pursued him for this long before. No one had thought him worth pursuing, and to have Greg do this now... Dale was torn. He liked Greg. “I’m still not sure.”

“While you decide, can I mark you?” Greg worried at Dale’s shoulder again, his teeth dragging along Dale’s skin.

Dale’s chest squeezed. He wanted this. Wanted Greg to want him. But the relationship also terrified him, and he didn’t know if it would last. It was probably better that it didn’t.

“Only for today,” Dale said, closing his eyes. He was still in heat, and he still wanted to belong to an alpha. Wanted to belong to Greg.

So Greg trailed his wrists over Dale’s belly, up his chest, leaving his aspen scent on Dale’s skin. Then he dragged his wrists over Dale’s throat, over his scent gland, and down his arms, to his wrists.

“Mine,” Greg whispered against his skin, kissing his shoulder.

Dale’s throat tightened. He relaxed against Greg, pressing close. When Greg’s knot receded, Greg didn’t immediately pull away. Instead, he held Dale, nuzzling his shoulder, leaving his scent on Dale’s clothes.

“What’re you doing tonight?” Greg asked.

Dale shrugged, surprised. “I don’t know. Grade more assignments, maybe.”

“Can I go home with you?”

Dale’s pulse tripped. This, he hadn’t expected. “Maybe.”

“Okay.” And Greg continued to hold him, his warm, strong body pressed against Dale’s.

Where they would go from here, Dale didn’t know. He was still a professor, and Greg was a student. At some point, they would part ways.

But for now, Greg was someone who cared about Dale, and maybe one dinner with him couldn’t be so bad.

  Afterword

Thank you for reading Teacher in Heat!

I wrote this short story in 2017 for a Back To School giveaway, and Dale and Greg lingered in my mind afterwards, asking me “what if that condom hadn’t been there?”

And so I went on to write Greg and Dale’s story, except Dale gets pregnant from this encounter. It’s a 97,000-word teacher/student romance, and can be found here:

Dale has a crush on his student—Greg Hastings. Sweet, straight-A alpha, and also the college president's son. Greg has been asking Dale out for coffee since semester began. And it's been taking all of Dale's self-control to turn him down.

Four years ago, Greg lost his best friend in a fire. At eighteen, he'd had ambitious plans: build a home, drive fast cars, live his life. At twenty-two, he's lost his courage to believe. How can he be there for an omega when he couldn't save his best friend? How can he promise anyone a future? The only things keeping him afloat—college basketball, and the cute, awkward professor in his classes, who sneaks glances at Greg when he thinks Greg isn't looking.

When Greg stumbles on Professor Kinney in heat, the spark between them explodes into an inferno. And despite countless failed attempts at pregnancy... Dale conceives. Dale refuses to abort the child. Greg refuses to abandon this omega.   Raph has never forgotten that kiss. Not when Wyatt had looked at him, wide-eyed and beautiful. Nine years ago, their grandmother caught him kissing Wyatt. Wyatt had fled, entangled himself in an abusive relationship. By not rescuing him, Raph had helped ruin his brother's life.

Saddled with guilt, Raph wishes he had fewer regrets: he should've stood up to Grandma, should've gotten himself out of debt, and stayed with the one omega he could never let go.

When their father throws a party, Raph finds Wyatt in heat. Their simmering embers kindle into a roaring flame; after a steamy night together, Wyatt discovers that he's pregnant. Raph refuses to fail his omega again. Wyatt refuses to abandon his innocent child. As their relationship intensifies, both men face the very real danger... of their family and pasts coming to pull them apart.
