Edward shrugged. “With a little help from the chief. And Mavis and Abby were such sweethearts about bringing Hope.”
Jim grinned and gave Edward a quick kiss. “God, I love you. You’re amazing.”
“Lord. Let us have breakfast before the mushy stuff,” Mavis said. “Do I smell your cinnamon rolls?”
“Yeah.”
“Perfect.” Abby held up a bag. “I brought croissants, too. And juice.”
“We have to go back after breakfast,” Mavis said, kissing Jim’s cheek. “We’re having dinner at Abby’s parents’ house.”
“I can’t believe you came all this way just to let me have breakfast with Hope.” Tears pricked his eyes. “Thank you.”
“You’re welcome, Jimmy. I didn’t want you to miss her first Christmas.” She gave him a one-armed hug. “Even though we’re not together, I still adore you. Okay? I always will.”
He nodded, his throat clogging. “Me, too.” He brought Hope to Edward. “And you. This makes my sapphire nose stud present to you seem like nothing.”
“Seeing how happy you are, that’s a spectacular present,” he whispered. “And I love you, too. Merry Christmas.”
Jim kissed him, then his daughter. “Merry Christmas, my sweet Hope.”
