  A few days later, I sat watching as a group of children played innocently in the creature’s shadow. Among them was my daughter. Then, the Golem caught my eye.

  You could not avoid the Golem’s stare. It stood watching—motionless in the ghetto square. Any window you stared out of you could see the creature—and it in turn could see you.

  Suddenly, I hear my daughter screaming below.

  The Golem became flushed with life.

  Before I could reach my daughter’s side, the Golem snatched her up: cradling my child in its misshapen arms. It carried her away—nearly trampling the other children who had gathered to witness the horrible sight.
