She blushed and smiled at me. Small tears forming in her eyes. “Yes! Of course!” With that answer, I took my magic and formed her a grand ring, thinking of all the rings I had seen in my world, creating the perfect one on her ring finger. It was elegant, but not too much. Huge diamonds looked fake to me. The ring, however, was simple and elegant. The band I created had such fine details, it reflected light comparable to the diamond. It was a princess cut, of course, followed by smaller diamonds that surrounded it.

She gasped, looking at it. “It’s… just beautiful.”

I stood back up and just took her hand and stood there with her looking out over the landscape- visioning all that could be and the future trials that we would face. There were going to be problems, as Valentine was well known, and I stole her away. I knew her family relations did not matter. They were never going to give away the sole heir to the throne, especially to one disliked as much as me from their propaganda. The approval did matter, and I knew the King, and many of the nobles would not approve.

I had to ask her how things worked here, I remembered everything, but the marriage was not something I knew anything about as it never concerned me. “I have a question.”

  “Yes?”

“How will our marriage be recognized, and how does that work in this world, or the kingdom?”

She thought for a while, then finally gave me an answer. “It is honestly easy for couples to get married. They can just have a simple ceremony, even with no one else present. It is harder to prove it at that point, which is not needed in most cases. However, with nobility and royalty, there are standards.”

She sighed exasperatedly. “Many marriages are arranged by families and then overseen by the church in those circumstances. That way, it is more documented and witnessed. If a noble goes rogue and just marries who they want, there can be acceptance. There also can be a consequence. They may be unrecognized or even exiled.”

I chuckled. “It sounds like a pain in the ass.”

“Yes, I feel we may have to make some political moves and do some social calls to certain nobles to get us more pull with acquiring recognition. I know my family will never just say, go for it. I mean, some don’t even want me breathing air, let alone, recognized in power.”

“We can figure it out,” I said, smiling at her. “If I can deal with dark lords and battle, I am sure I can handle this.”

“I knew of generals that had great displeasure with this kind of battle, in the grand war of the hypocritical socialites.” She raised her eyebrows at me.

I took both her hands and gave her a kiss on her forehead. “Look at you having jokes, good job you.”

“Yes, indeed. Though, it is partially true. I wish you luck on your dangerous journey. Your strength can only get you so far. At least you have a lot of charm, though.”

We both laughed and walked back into our room from the balcony, it was getting late, and it seemed I had a lot of sleep I needed to catch up on. I undressed down to my skivvies quickly and got into bed. I crept under the blankets, slightly nervous as Valentine snuggled up against me. We had laid together before, but it felt different this time, as we had an understanding instead of just being friendly companions.

“Have a good rest, my hero.”

I gulped nervously. “Yup, you too, my princess.”

She snuggled against me, and as I sat there thinking about how I, a dude from nothing, was a hero in my own castle, ready to take on the world with a beautiful elf in my bed. It was like every nerd’s fantasy, or really any man’s fantasy. Going from average in most senses of the word to a force of nature in a strange land with very different people and exotic women. I started to drift off when I felt the tickle of a slight whisper in my ear. “Soon, you will get your reward.” I felt a light squeeze on my bulge, and then it was gone. She drifted away into slumber. After that, of course, I didn’t fall asleep right away, but that was ok. I only had to fight off my second brain as it screamed and proclaimed to me how it would be its own hero and conquer things that deserved conquering.

Finally, after a while, I did drift off, and I fell into a dream.

  ◆◆◆

I was standing in a glorious field of golden grass as far as my eyes could see. Small rolling hills, of only just grass blades lightly drifting back and forth in a breeze. It was warm and beautiful. I looked around and didn’t see anyone else around me.

  Is this a dream?

I felt at great peace and totally relaxed, like all my concerns and worries were gone, vanished with the warm breeze that lightly mingled with my hair. I just went with the flow and looked up at the brilliant blue sky. I noticed I was wearing blue jeans and a t-shirt. Well, that’s a change.

A familiar voice spoke from behind me. “Hello, Rezner.”

I turned around and studied the beautiful woman that stood before me. She was wearing a fashionable sundress with a pattern of daisies on it, very much like my world. She had light brown hair that tussled in the wind and the brightest grey eyes I had ever laid eyes on. She adjusted her hair and just smiled at me. I smiled back, still having my thumbs in my jean pockets, I missed jeans. Something to think about in the future.

  “Freyja?”

“Yes, nice to meet you in a more personal way.”

I looked around, squinting as the sun intruded in my eyes in a pleasurable way. “Is this a dream?”

“In a way, yes. As you know, I have been weakened. With you defeating the shade Victor, I have regained some more of my strength. He cannot upkeep his hold on me now with where you sent him.”

“Ah, that’s good. What is this place?”

  “Do you like it?”

“Yes, it’s… wonderful. I just feel good here.”

“It is my field where the souls of warriors that have died in combat go.”

  I frowned.

She released some light laughter. “Do not worry so, you are not dead, Rezner. I am just meeting you here to speak.”

“Oh, well, that’s good. You had me wondering for a second. One minute falling asleep, next minute in some fields of dead heroes.”

“Walk with me and let us speak with each other.”

I took her arm in mine, and we walked a while, enjoying the environment, our destination nowhere as it was only a never-ending field. She had a soft smile and seemed very happy I was there.

“Do you know why I was picked as a hero in the first place? I mean, it wasn’t like in my world I was some champion and super-powerful person. I was average at best, and I mean my flaws. Don’t even get me started there. So, I don’t really get it. Like, I don’t feel I’m worthless, but I just don’t understand why me of all people.”

She looked at me, ever-smiling, and reached over and fixed my hair a bit where it was in my face. “It is your heart. You have a good heart and try to do what is right. No one is perfect, and a big heart can fall far, as it is so large that it can have a hard time containing everything it absorbs. You love, and you protect. You now have others to protect your heart. You didn’t have that before.”

“That makes sense, I suppose. So why the visit with me?”

She softly put her hand on my face. It was warmer and more comforting than even the fields. My face pushed back into her appendages like they were charming me. “I wanted to see you in person, as much in person as I can accomplish for now. You were my champion. I am a goddess, but you saved me. No one else did.” She bit her lower lip and looked at me with her grey flirtatious eyes. “Also, to speak. There is trouble coming. You know of the dark lord, and you will have to face what he throws your way as you make your way to defeat him. You must prepare for that and build up the strength around you. Yes, you are a hero, but even you can’t stand alone. The core of women that protect your heart will grow, and you need to grow the might around you, around your lands.”

“Ok, I can look into that.”

She pulled away from me and stretched out our hands. She let me go as she walked from me. She twirled like a dancer
as she moved further away, in elegant movement. Then she stopped and turned back towards me. “Your marriage, I will help with that as much as I can. I will need one last thing from you, though.”

  “Whatcha’ need?”

“Remember me well, and how I look now.”

“I can do that, that’s easy, how could I forget you?”

She leaned forward and winked. I turned away a bit as I could see down her blouse. “You are such a flirt, remember me so you can make me a new body. You have the power to make me one. I am split. Part of me is still in the sword and part of me in you as well. This is my field, but it is only in your mind. We are not in my actual fields. Create my body, release me from the sword and you.”

“I will see what I can do, of course.”She came back and gave me a hug, it squeezing me full of pleasure. “Thank you, my hero.” She started to walk away from me backward and gave me a soft wave. “We will meet again.” I waved goodbye to her.

I woke up, and it was morning, Valentine sleeping with her whole body pressed against me in a cuddle as her arms and legs wrapped around me. I looked towards the window at the rays of the sun that shown through it, lighting our room with wonderful light like I felt in my dream.

I think things are going to get a lot more interesting very soon.

  About the Author

Envy Mercury wrote an award-winning short story while attending college many years ago. Having a passion for creating music, most of his writing was as a lyricist in the years following. He wrote scripts for animations and graphic novels.

He grew up in a smaller town in the fabled state of Wyoming. Fabled as some do not think exists, much like the lands of fairytales.

He writes his characters as having something to prove, and he pushes for a balance of action, comedy, and romance.

While working on his novels, he faces a real-life arch-nemesis of distraction, including two cats that suggest ideas as they sing their people's songs.

He enjoys reading, movies, games, anime, and driving his girlfriend to snore as he obsesses over word counts during the process of throwing his little gems of novels together.
