El Jefazo dials in the combination on the wall safe and withdraws the Atlantean touchscreen wrapped in its protective cloth. He taps the display. El Aniquilador’s face dissolves and his face fills the screen in its place, responding to the master access control he set up before he shared the device over the El Aniquilador. El Jefazo snickers with the evil glee of a man who knows how to use advanced technology to advance his ambitions. “I can do what you could not, my old friend,” he says to the chair facing him, as if he was talking to El Aniquilador’s ghost.
After tapping in a sequence of Atlantean symbols, the display projects the hologram of the forbidden island where the original Sirenians live. He studies the island topography for a long time, trying to discern its location. “Where are you?” He tips his glass to them before emptying it. “Not to worry. I will find you.”
As the liquor goes to his head, El Jefazo logs into Facebook and types in a search for Laura Douglass. A few clicks later, he’s looking at Ellen’s profile. “Ah, my new wife has returned to Seattle. From there she will travel to Reykjavik.” El Jefazo walks over to the liquor cabinet to refill his glass. “Iceland is a small market for us, with strategic importance as a cargo transfer point. I must go there to check on our operations.”
He strolls around the living room, emptying his drink and puffing his cigar as his mind flashes through his findings in the now-destroyed pyramid, the scenarios for using the Atlantean technology he found inside, and strategic recalculations to account for the travel plans of the sirens, the Douglass family and Ellen.
El Jefazo sets down his cigar and morphs into a lion-man. He unleashes a lion’s roar, his chest thrusting forward as the sound fills him with the primal power of the king of the jungle. Shifting his attention to the hologram, he pokes a forepaw into the forbidden island. “My prized possessions. I will hunt you down and claim my rights,” he says to the hologram. “No matter how long it takes.”
