  “You mean…” I didn’t even dare say it.

  “Yup. I put down the money this morning. You’re going to have to chip in your share, but I think when you see the place you won’t mind.” He opened the door, and we were flooded with sunlight, thanks to the floor-to-ceiling windows that ran the length of the living room.

  Looking out at the ocean of tall buildings and broad, crowded avenues spread before me, I realized Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz had it wrong: Home is okay, but there’s no place like New York.

  Irwin looked into my eyes, we burst out laughing, and before I knew it, he had swept me off my feet and carried me across the threshold.
