“It’s for the best.”
Turner knew it was the last time he would ever see her. It pained him, but it was always going to be the outcome. He had tried to delay the inevitable, but it had blown up in his face.

He sat in his car just staring into the distance. The conversation with Alice had made him realize he would be alone for the rest of his life… however long or short that might be. She didn’t deserve to have her life put at risk for no reason, and it was all his fault. Turner promised himself he’d never make that mistake again.
His phone rang.
Turner pulled it out of his pocket, expecting it to be Alice… thinking she had something else to say to him once she’d had a few minutes to process everything he said.
It was Howard.
Turner sighed and swiped his finger across the screen to answer the call.
“Hello?”
“James.”
“Yean?”
“Where are you?”
Turner cleared his throat.
“Well, you said I should take a couple of days off… so I went fishing.”
“Fishing?”
“Yes. Fly fishing.”
“Didn’t know you were a fisherman.”
“I’m not. Not anymore.”
“Right… anyway… I need you to come in.”
“Now?”
“Yes, now.”
“Did something happen?” Turner asked.
“Yes. Look, I won’t get into specifics. It’s Holloway. We have some information… and we need to act on it. I’ll tell you more when you get here.”
“It’s going to be a little while, but I’ll be as quick as I can.”
“Turner… where the hell are you?”
“South Carolina… near the coast.”
“I’m not even going to ask. Look, just get yourself to Charleston Airport. We’ll figure it out from our end.”
“I’ll be there.”
“And Turner?”
“Yes?”
“Get yourself together. This isn’t going to be a walk in the park. It’s going to make the last week seem like a pleasant dream.”
“I’m ready.”
Turner ended the call and tossed his phone on the seat next to him.
It was unusual for Howard to call him and give any insight into what was going on, so for him to mention that it involved Holloway meant that something happened.
The clock was ticking, and his fellow agent needed him.
