In the communications’ clearing Tara and Emily heard the roar as battle commenced.

  : The Larg attack the centre :

  Tara marked the map with the appropriate annotations. Her hands shook.

  She ‘listened’ hard as Kolyei continued to send news of the battle’s progress, heart in mouth, until eventually she heard Kolyei broadcast : Larg retreat. Our Lindars to hold their positions :

  She breathed out in relief.

  “Larya says to send Lindars Msnei and Vlrnei to advance and strengthen the lines,” Kolyei told Mariya.

  She passed the order across to the Susas of packs Msnei and Vlrnei.

  Emily marked their movement on the map.

  “This is working,” announced Mariya in jubilation. “The Larg are confused.”

  “Now we have to hold,” warned Kolyei. “The Larg will be readying for another charge.”
