The two police vehicles skidded to a stop about twenty metres in front of the motley gaggle of children and their teacher.
“Shit!” Sam exclaimed with a wide smile. “Have a bloody look at this lot. If ever there was anyone who needed a good bath, it’s this mob.”
“Let’s get them all a drink,” Barker said. “A bath can come later.”
Almost simultaneously, Foley, Sam and Barker got out of their vehicle as did Sparrow and Smart from theirs.
“Now, children!” Tracy called softly to her class.
As one, all the children began clapping. There were no loud whoops of joy, no cheering, just eleven young, dirty-faced children and their teacher smiling widely and applauding the five police officers standing next to their vehicles.
Richard ‘Maxwell’ Smart stepped away from the four-by-four and began walking towards the smiling, applauding group of children. His eyes sought Tracy.
Tracy saw Smart step away and move forward. She stepped from the midst of her group of students and ran awkwardly across the space and met him half way. She fell into his arms and sobbed openly against his chest. “I knew you’d come,” she managed to utter softly between bouts of sobbing.
Smart took her face in his hands, wiped at the tears staining her cheeks, and smiled at her. “Don’t cry,” he said softly. “You’re much more beautiful when you smile.” He leaned forward and kissed her lightly, first on one eye, then on the other, and then on the mouth. “Ready to go home?” he asked.
