  “Why are you still here?”

“Do you really think I could go on without you? Do you not realize how much I love you? Fuck, Mary, you are all that matters in my life. Without you, I might as well be dead.”

“Don’t say that.” She knew what a world without Ty was like.

“Where is all your stuff?” Ty hadn’t heard a thing about her. He couldn’t ask, afraid that his plan to see her would somehow be prevented.

“I couldn’t live here without you. I’m moving to my mom’s for a while.”

“How is your mom? Any word on a transplant yet?”

“Oh, God, you don’t know any of that?”

  “Any of what?”

“My mom had her transplant. I wasn’t even here the night you were shot. I was in the hospital waiting for my mom to come out of surgery. In the span of a few hours I went from worrying about losing her, to finding out I had lost you.”

Ty could no longer stop himself; he drew Mary into his arms. She didn’t fight him, just sighed into the comfort of his chest. It was where she had needed to be for so very long.

“I’m so sorry, angel. I never knew. I’m so sorry you had to go through that alone.” He stroked her hair, not letting her go. “And is she okay?”

Mary lifted her head to smile at him. “She is. She’s home and she’s fine. I was on my way to be with her.”

He kissed her forehead and rested his head against hers. How was he going to let her leave him?

“What happens now, Ty?” The anguish in her voice matched his feelings perfectly.

“I don’t know. I guess you go to Florida.”

“What about you? Where are you going to go?”

“I don’t know. Wherever I go, I’ll probably always be looking over my shoulder.”

“Do you think the Raylyanus will be looking for you?”

“I doubt it. It’s the cartel that worries me more. The only thing I can do is hope that my death was believable, and that I never run into someone who recognizes me.”

  “Come with me,” she pleaded.

“You would never be safe if I left with you. You have too many contacts here. Faith would know, or your mom.”

“We wouldn’t have to tell them.”

“Mary, I’m not going to ask you to give up your life for me.”

“What if I don’t give it up, but share it with someone new?”

“Already thinking of replacing me?” Ty smiled, catching on to her game.

“I hear Florida is a good place to find a man.”

  “Yeah?”

She nodded. Their lips met once more, briefly, before he pulled back, giving her that one-sided smirk that made her melt.

“I always wanted to live somewhere warm.”
