“Listen, tell that fucking producer that the whole stunt crew wants a renegotiation of their contracts, and whatever evil plan that these movie honchos have hacked in secret will not work, and we will not work for peanuts. And when you have set up the meeting, only then call me. And Todd, if you lose your job, then don’t forget that all of us lose it too. So you aren’t the only victim in all of this. I would have still appreciated if you had given me a hint or something. Anyways, give my message to that bald bastard. Bye.”
I threw the phone on the couch and looked at Gary, who seemed satisfied by my reaction.
“How many people do we have in the stunt crew?” I asked, massaging my temples.
“About 50,” Gary replied.
“Okay, ask all of them to be ready and to be called anywhere in the next two hours. We are going to have a meeting with the producer.”
“That won’t be necessary. They sent me here for a reason. The stunt crew wants you to negotiate on their behalf. They think you are close to Elizabeth Smith, and would be the best person to negotiate for all of us.”
“But I have no idea what all of you want?”
“We just want the fee that was promised to us at the start of the movie. Nothing more and nothing less.”
I looked at Gary and saw he was pretty confident with his decision, and it made sense to me as well to have a single person negotiate on behalf of 50 people instead of 50 people crammed in a room shouting to be heard.
“I would still like you to be with me. You are the senior-most stuntman of the crew, and it would give our cause a lot more authority if you showed up beside me.”
“Okay. I’ll come with you, but I won’t speak much. I am not much of a diplomat.”
“I understand,” I said and took a long breath. This day was going to be harder than I thought.
