  First Kiss

  Adrian Kingston

I woke up to the strong smell of beach air and an empty bed. Emily’s dainty figure was no longer curled up beside me and her pillow had gone cold.

  I also had a boner.

Groaning, I pulled the covers away from my body and got out of bed, readjusting my boxers in the process. I could faintly hear clattering coming from downstairs and immediately made my way there.

I yawned loudly just as I walked over to the kitchen counter and smirked once she looked up at me. Her hair was still a mess and she was still in nothing but my T-shirt and her underwear. “Good morning, housewife.” I watched as a delicate pink flushed against her cheeks before looking down at the food she was cooking. “Is this for me?”

Before she was able to respond, I took a bite out of the toast on the plate and watched as her expression turned into a small frown. “That was mine.” She huffed, while placing a hand on her hip.

I shrugged and smirked at her again before taking a seat and dragging the plate closer towards me. Emily gave me a look of disbelief before turning back to the stove. “Thanks for the view, shortcake, it’s amazing,” I spoke up after swallowing the food in my mouth.

I heard her gasp lightly before she pulled the shirt down to cover more of her backside, before she turned to me with narrowed eyes. “Keep your eyes on your food.” I watched as she tried to fight a smile from appearing on her lips before she broke out into a grin, distracting me from eating even more than she had before.

“I’ll keep my eyes on them when you put me some cereal,” I replied, trying to cover up the fact that I had been checking her out.

“Put it yourself, you lazy butt!” She laughed.

  “I can’t. I’m eating.” I grinned lazily.

She rolled her eyes and shook her head before opening up a cupboard on top of her head. “Which one do you feel like eating this morning, your highness?” She asked sarcastically, turning back to me.

  “Surprise me.”

She pulled out a purple box with cereal that contained high fibre and I groaned. “Of course you’d go for the healthy, boring option. Why am I not surprised?” I muttered in a deadpan tone.

“Shut up. You’re lucky I’m even putting you some in the first place!” She exclaimed, pouring it into a large bowl.

“Thank you.” I grinned broadly once she placed the bowl in front of me. She stared at me for a fraction longer than usual before shaking her head slightly and going back to her own breakfast, plating up the freshly cooked toast and taking her seat across from me.

As soon as she began to eat her own breakfast, her eye fluttered shut and she let out a small gasp once she savoured the taste. My lips tugged into a small smile at their own accord as I watched her open her eyes and start to blush once she noticed me watching. “What?” She murmured, trying to hide her flushed cheeks with her hair.

The smile didn’t leave my lips when I spoke. “I’ve noticed something about you, shortcake.”

I watched as her eyebrows rose slightly in surprise and she nodded for me to continue. Turning my smile into a smirk, I leaned a little forward before speaking up again. “Your eyelids flutter closed and you let out a small sigh every time you experience something you enjoy. You just did it now, and you always make that small sigh in your sleep when I wake up in the middle of the night and wrap my arms back around your waist.” To look casual, I shoved a spoonful of cereal into my mouth and started chewing on the soft food as I watched her eyes widen.

“O – Oh, really?” She fumbled, blushing.

I nodded before looking her in the eyes while trying to say something that was more my character. “Don’t get me started on how many times you’ve done it when I’ve touched you.”

“Shut up!” She exclaimed in a squeaky voice, before jumping out of her seat and taking our empty plates to the sink. I chuckled before chomping on some more soggy cereal and observing her back. She had been making it harder and harder to keep my restraint to kiss her in check and I had a feeling I wasn’t going to be able to keep it in any longer.

“We’re going to spend the day on the beach again,” I spoke up.

Emily nodded. “Okay, fine with me,” she replied, continuing to wash the soap off the plate in her hands.

“We’ll eat lunch there too. We need to make the most of it since our flight is at 5AM tomorrow morning,” I continued, waiting for her reaction.

“5AM?!” She exclaimed, turning around to give me another look of disbelief.

I nodded, before getting out of my seat and placing the empty bowl into the sink and giving her a pointed look.

“It’s a five-hour flight, so we’ll already be missing most of the morning in the office,” I explained.

Emily nodded, looking in deep in thought, before sighing. “I understand,” she murmured while turning off the tap. “Let’s go up and get dressed then. I want to soak up as much sun as my pale skin can take in before we go back to hell.” She grinned.

I chuckled and leaned over to bite her shoulder playfully, making her squeak in surprise before a mischievous glint came to her eyes. I caught on to what she was thinking instantly, and we both began racing up the stairs of the beach house, laughing loudly at the fact that we both knew what was going to happen

  ***

“Feed me!” I demanded, glaring at her exasperated look.

“Adrian, you’re not two! Feed yourself!” Emily snapped back
, sending a glare over in my direction. I felt my own glare deepen before I wrapped my arms around her waist and pulled her into my torso, making her scream in surprise.

“Are you insane?!” She exclaimed, glaring down at me.

My annoyed glare transformed into a smirk. “Feed me,” I repeated, lowering the tone of my voice in a way I knew she liked.

I watched as Emily looked around the crowded beach in shock, hoping no one was watching my hand slide down and squeeze her backside and making her let out another light gasp. “There you go again!” I grinned in a sing song voice, pointing out the small gasp I noticed in the morning.

Emily’s face flushed again in embarrassment before she forcefully shoved three pieces of fries into my mouth with her usual glare, distracting me long enough to stumble out of my grip and off of me entirely.

I began to chuckle at her lack of coordination, making her glare deepen as I chomped onto the fries smugly.

“You are so obnoxious,” I heard her mumble.

“Are you sure you want to say that to your boss’s face?” I asked with a smirk, raising my eyebrows playfully.

“Absolutely!” She grinned, before her tongue poked out from between her lips.

I chuckled before another small smile of admiration escaped onto my lips as I watched her, before getting out of my seated position. “Really?” I questioned again, walking towards her in a threatening manner.

I watched as her eyes widened in shock and she began to inch away from me by walking backwards. She visibly gulped and let out a loud squeal that had a few others turn to look at her before I made my move. She turned away from me and instantly began running towards the ocean and I fought the urge to laugh at her hope of escaping me.

I was taller, and much faster.

I caught up to her seconds after she took off, and wrapped my arms around her waist and hoisted her over my shoulder with a chuckle.

“Adrian!” She squealed. “Put me down!”

“Apologise,” I demanded, smirking at her miserable state.

I heard her grumble something before small fists lightly pounded my bare back. “Adrian.” She growled with a warning tone.

I began to chuckle again at her helplessness and started spinning her around before a middle-aged couple stopped behind me. The woman with pale blonde hair let out a sigh of admiration, making both Emily and me freeze in shock and confusion.

I turned back around to face the couple fully, making Emily scowl in the process.

“How long have you two been married?” The woman asked, taking me by surprise.

“We’re not married,” Emily laughed nervously in response before I was able to reply myself. Suddenly, I felt her warm breath against my neck. “Put me down, it’s rude!” She hissed into my hair, making me close my eyes as I tried to control my bodily urges. She was still trying to test my patience against kissing her.

I finally decided it was time to let her down from my shoulder, and let her slide down my body but wrapped my arm around her waist so she didn’t go too far.

Emily smiled at the couple once she finally composed herself, and the woman spoke up. “Oh! Sorry, how long have you two been dating then?” She asked, smiling back at Emily as she hugged her husband.

Before Emily was able to respond this time, I pecked her cheek. “Three years. Funny you bring up marriage, actually. I’ve proposed to her three times, and she still insists on rejecting and publicly humiliating me every single time it happens.” I let out a fake pout and tried to contain my laugh when Emily’s head snapped up to look at me.

Emily tried to talk again but I continued from where I left off. “It’s really getting to me, you know? I don’t know what to do anymore. My heart feels like it’s going to explode from the inside out every time you say no to me.” I looked down at her with a smug expression, hoping she’d get the double meaning.

I watched as her eyes narrowed into a glare while her cheeks slowly started tinting into a deep red. “I mean, sometimes I think you’re only with me for the sex, apple.” I gave her a false look of disbelief, trying to keep my laugh in from her traumatised expression.

She glared at me for a fraction longer before her face turned into a pout. “Well, fuzzy bunny, I didn’t want to have to tell you this. But since you’ve brought it up, I don’t want to marry you because you’re kind of… lacking… in that department.” Her gaze travelled down to my shorts, and I glared in response. So she wanted to play.

“I’m sure he loves you very much, sweetie, no matter how… um, lacking he is. That won’t matter at the end of the day! I mean, from the way we saw you two act towards each other all day today, we can tell how much you’re fond of each other. I think you should accept the next time he proposes.” The woman spoke up, patting Emily on the shoulder with a smile.

“And maybe you shouldn’t propose somewhere so public next time.” The man winked in my direction, grinning.

Emily laughed at this statement, instantly bringing a smile to my face and making my mood skyrocket. She began to turn towards me and I switched the smile to my trademark smirk. “I’ll keep that in mind for Take #4. Is that alright with you, fluffy munchkin?” I asked, raising an eyebrow while waiting for her to reply.

Emily cringed at the nickname, making my smirk widen slightly in amusement, before she pressed her small palm against her chest and letting out a fake gasp. “That would be amazing!” She gushed, grinning widely.

The couple exchanged amused glances before the man bent down to place a kiss on the woman’s lips, making her blush. “Well, we’d best be off. We have to make the most of our 25th year anniversary without the kids around as much as we can,” he joked, before looking down at the woman with an expression filled with love and admiration. The woman began to blush even deeper before waving at both Emily and me, and they continued walking down the beach while holding hands.

“You’re an idiot!” Emily suddenly scowled beside me once the couple were out of earshot. I smirked down at her again as she tried to wriggle her way out of my hold.

“A pretty convincing idiot. They ate up the lie like it was their next meal!” I called out, grinning proudly.

Emily gawked in disbelief before I felt her tiny palm against my arm as she attempted to hit me. “That’s because you told them we’d been dating for three years and that you’ve proposed to me!” She scowled with a small frown.

“Oh, you’re in no position to talk, shortcake. ‘Fuzzy bunny’?” I repeated, breaking into a fit of laughter. Emily tried to glare at me, but ended up joining me in laughter. “That almost cracked me – I’ll give you a point there.” I announced once we cooled down.

Emily smirked before biting her lip in thought, making me internally groan at the small gesture. Fucking hell, what was this girl trying to do? “Hmm. I believe that now makes the Tally board Kingston: 1, Johnson: 2 – I’m including my UNO win as a part of my score,” she stated smugly, grinning up at me.

I shook myself out of my haze before letting out a cautious breath. “I let you win,” I finally confessed, repressing another laugh.

Emily’s nostrils flared out in anger. “I knew it!” She shouted, jumping slightly. “You couldn’t stand the fact that you were about to be beaten by a girl, so you decided to let me win on purpose so your ego wouldn’t – Oh my god! Is that a crab?!” She suddenly exclaimed, averting her attention to the creature that was crawling across the sand.

Her sudden change of topic caused my expression to morph into one of confusion before I followed the trail to what her hand was pointing at. In an instant, she was running over towards the sea creature.

“Oh my god. It’s a real crab! Look! It has hands and it’s walking sideways and it looks angry and everything! A real crab!” She babbled on excitedly while smiling down at the awkward looking crab.

It hit me right at that precise moment like a ton of bricks. I don’t know whether it was the way the bright Californian sunshine bounced off her blonde locks or whether it was
the beaming smile she wore on her face as she observed an insignificant crab on the ocean floor – but I knew from that exact moment that I was almost – if not definitely – head over heels for my assistant.

Emily sighed happily before she looked over at me with a look of caution on her face. Once I realised she caught me staring at her, I shook myself out of my mental state and blinked a few times to try and recompose myself around her.

I could feel my cheeks starting to burn up as a blush began its descent upon them and attempted to cover it up with a smirk. “Yes, shortcake. Very good! Now how to do you spell that?” I drawled out slowly, acting like she were a toddler.

I watched the excitement in her face falter momentarily before she ran over to me and tugged me with her towards the little creature. “Isn’t it so beautiful?” She murmured, losing herself once again through observing the crab.
