“Can I talk to you for a moment?”
“Of course.”
The two moved away from the group and Bliss looked up at him.
“I want you to know that I value what you do at J.P. Morgan.”
“Thank you, George.”
“And I just want to say that if the pressure gets to be too much, or you need a break, please come to me…” he said earnestly.
Bliss frowned. “What’s going on?”
“I just don’t want another Brad situation.”
“I’m not on drugs, George.”
He nodded. “Thank God. I know the stressors that are on you being the only woman and minority.” George told her. “I also Googled and found out that stress and heart disease are the number one killers of black women.”
“What would we do without Google?”
“I’m just concerned about you.”
She stared at him. “Why?”
“I know that you met with Brad at the office, and that he lives on your floor. I just hoped that you hadn’t started indulging with him…”
“No. I really had no dealings with Brad outside of work, and our meeting at the office was simply to discuss the possibility of him offering some additional services to my client list.” Bliss explained smoothly.
“Well, I hate that he left us this way,” George said quietly. “But, I hope people have learned from him…”
Bliss nodded. “Oh, I’ve learned quite a bit.”
She looked over as they were joined by Mr. Baxter.
“Bliss, George...sad that we have to meet here.”
Bliss nodded in agreement.
“How are you, Mr. Baxter?” George asked.
“I’ve seen better days. We lost an up and coming star at J.P.” Mr. Baxter replied. “But, at least we still have our brightest and best.” He looked at Bliss.
“Thank you...and Brad’s death is a tragedy.”
George saw one of his bosses and looked at the pair. “Please excuse me.”
When he walked away Mr. Baxter turned to Bliss.
“Have you decided to start making those new friends we discussed?” Mr. Baxter asked.
Bliss looked over at where Nikki stood, then thought about Rome and Laz with a smile.
“Yes, to go along with the real ones I already have…”
