Jordan thought about it for a few seconds. “Personally, I’d rather see the guy thrown into Cretaceon, along with every other white cop from the Confederacy.” Looking about, he continued, “But that ain’t gonna solve the problem at hand. If Lane wants that good ole boy, let him have him. But and this is a big but, that man ever try anything to me or Summer, I’ll take his ass out. Clear?”

  The others nodded.

“All right then. Highly irregular, but we’ll give him a shot. Lane, you tell him.”

  “Yessir.”

“Well, I think I’ve kept you long enough, and I’m sure certain wives and girlfriends are waiting for you. Meri said she’d be at the Cave Bear Cave. You guys go on over and I’ll let her know. Meanwhile, I’m sure Lisa’s arranged housing for our guests.

The men made their way to the Cave Bear Cave, finding the rest of the party in the outdoor beer garden behind the building. As they sat down, Lane looked over at a glum-looking Drew and asked, “Have you ever thought about seeing new worlds, new cultures, and going where others haven’t gone before? The Corps of Discovery could use somebody with your brains and determination.”

Bill could have sworn he had heard that phrase before, but couldn’t quite place it.

  Stay safe out there.

  Author’s Note

By training and many, many years of education, I am (among other things) a geographer. As such, I read a lot as it relates to geography. I also look at maps - just for fun! This series, relies heavily upon concepts, hypotheses, and theories of geography. What drove Explorer were two books I read, one in college (way back in the 1980s), and the other more recently. The first was Joel Garreau’s The Nine Nations of North America, the second was Colin Woodard’s American Nations. If you haven’t read either of these books, I highly recommend doing so.

For those that might somehow think I’m anti-police due to the violence in Explorer, be assured, as a former police officer, I am not. Furthermore, two police officers I worked with who died in the line of duty have characters named in their honor in this novel. Along with carrying a Thin Blue Line with their names on it across Spain on the Camino de Santiago, and lighting a candle in their memory in the Cathedral of St. James, it is but a small tribute I give to them in their honor. There’s a reason why the Corps’ unofficial motto is “Stay safe out there.”

James S. Peet is a modern-day Renaissance Man. He’s lived on four continents, six countries, and visited countless more, including a walk across Spain on the Camino de Santiago. He’s been a National Park Service Ranger, a police officer, a tow-truck driver, a college instructor, a private investigator, a fraud examiner/forensic accountant, an inventor, and an entrepreneur. His other writing endeavors include several articles on modern sea piracy, economics, and the private investigation of fraud. He lives on the top of a small mountain in the foothills of Washington’s Cascade Mountains with his wife, dogs, barn cats, and whatever adult daughter returns to the nest.
