He fucked me well, then slid down, trailing his tongue along my curves. He found me wet and wanting. He knew just how to play me with lips and tongue and the gentle scrape of his teeth. I bucked for him.

Then it was my turn. Joker lay back, hooking his hands behind his head. I kissed my way down the length of him then fastened my lips around his shaft.

He threaded his fingers through my hair, spurring me on. I loved the way his toes curled as he got ready to climax. Just before, I came back up and straddled him.

“Yeah, baby,” he said, guiding my hips as I centered and seated myself, taking him all the way in.

There was no finesse after that. I threw my head back and found my rhythm. Joker groaned as I found my release. My orgasm ripped out of me, sending stars shooting behind my eyes. God, he was so good. This was so good. Perfect. Mine. Sacred.

Then it was Joker’s turn. He kept me there, his dick rooted deep. He held my hips steady as he thrust upward and found his own rhythm. I loved the little hitch he gave. His lips parted, his eyes rolled back. Then his warmth spread inside me. Only then did he let me go. I fell forward, my hair cascading over his chest. Then he pulled me against him and cradled me as he found my lips and kissed me softly.

It was almost time. Ten more minutes and I’d have to race to the shower and start getting ready.

“Do you think they’ll all come?” I asked. Though I had tuition payments lined up, I still worried. Maybe the parents would change their minds.

“They’ll come,” he said. “Are you kidding? Those kids love you, Tara. They all know you’ve been the one making that place as great as it is for years. You said yourself your enrollment is even higher than before Linda left.”

I nuzzled against him. “I love you,” I whispered. We had taken to saying it to each other a dozen or more times a day.

He’d been so quiet when he came back that day. I knew I would never fully understand what happened to Sal Twomey. Club business. Amy and the other wives and girlfriends warned me not to ask too many questions sometimes. But I knew he was dead. My father had been arrested for killing him, but the prosecutor decided to drop the case. The evidence all pointed to self-defense.

He was gone now. I hadn’t yet decided whether I could ever forgive him for what he’d done to me. For now, I needed space and time to think. And I felt safe in Joker’s arms.

“I still can’t believe it’s happening,” I said. I leaned over the bed and grabbed a tee shirt off the floor. Joker pulled on his jeans and ran a hand through his hair.

We’d have breakfast together as soon as Toby woke up. I worried at first whether he’d get confused by all the time I spent with Joker. But it turned out he felt safer having me here. Toby said he’d never forget that I refused to leave him when Twomey came for him. He told Joker I was his guardian angel. It made me cry the first time.

I loved Toby’s father. But I loved Toby just as much.

I had just pulled on a pair of boxer shorts when Toby knocked on the bedroom door. Smiling, Joker went to open it a crack.

Toby whispered to his father. “Did you ask her yet? Did she say yes?”

Joker’s face fell. His jaw dropped as he looked back at me. “Uh ... you uh ... buddy …”

My heart raced. Ask me what?

“Hurry up and ask her,” Toby whispered again, though his voice was nearly the volume of a shout.

“Wait downstairs,” he said. “I’ll be down in a minute.”

Joker pressed his head to the doorframe. His face was red as he turned to me and smiled.

  I couldn’t breathe. He wasn’t ... he couldn’t …

  “What’s going on?” I managed.

“Well,” he said. “I had this big plan to take you out to dinner tonight. On the docks. Under the Liberty Bridge. I love it there and it still pisses me off those assholes tried to ruin that night for us when we first went out …”

He was rambling. “Joker ... what is Toby talking about?”

Joker dropped his head. Still shirtless, he had a bandage over a new tattoo on his chest. He wouldn’t tell me what it was. He reached for his leather cut hanging from the back of his door.

My heart was in my throat as he pulled out a small velvet box. He came to me. I covered my mouth with my hand as Joker dropped to one knee.

“I love you, baby,” he said. “The last six months have been some of the hardest, but best of my life. You’re good for me. You’re good for Toby. When I know what I want, I’m not afraid to go after it. Although ... right now I gotta admit I’m terrified.”

“Joker?” I said; my voice felt thick.

“Baby,” he said, taking a breath. He opened the box and the biggest, most perfect diamond ring I’d ever seen glittered at me in a teardrop setting.

“Tara,” he said. “Will you marry us?”

I couldn’t help it. I giggled uncontrollably. A wave of euphoria swept through me.

Joker looked puzzled. I went to my knees in front of him. I held out my hand. Smiling, he slipped the ring on my finger.

It was a perfect fit. Just like Joker Smith.

“Yes,” I gasped. “God, yes. Are you sure?”

It was his turn to laugh. His eyes shone as brightly as the ring he’d just put on my finger.

“Tara, I was sure about five seconds after I met you.”

I threw my arms around his neck. Joker lifted me off the ground. He twirled me around and set me down.

“Good,” he said. “Because this would be a bitch to have removed.” He lifted the bandage that covered his new tattoo. It was healed now. I gasped. In swirling calligraphy, he’d had my name etched above his heart.

There was a soft knock on the door. “Dad?” Toby said. “What did she say?”

I peppered Joker’s face with kisses. Then I let him go and open the door.

Toby spilled into the room. He was holding a small glass against his ear, trying to hear through the door.

I went back to my knees and gathered him into my arms.

“She said yes,” I told him. “And you’ve made me the happiest girl in the world.”

Toby smiled. “I told ya,” he said to Joker. Then he planted a big, wet, sloppy kiss on my cheek. I picked him up and we both went into Joker’s arms.

“I picked it out all by myself,” Toby said, pointing to the ring.

I laughed. “You picked the perfect one,” I said.

“No,” Joker smiled. “I did that when I met you.”

  Six Months Later

  Joker

A year to the day after I met her, Tara Kimball would become my wife. From the window of the meeting room, I could see the last-minute finishing touches being made to the pavilion set up behind the club.

It was Tara’s idea to have the wedding here. On a bright summer day, we’d closed down the bar. The woods behind it had been transformed into some kind of hidden, magical world. Twinkling white lights wrapped around the trees. The decorators Amy and Tara hired rolled out a white runner for an aisle. Rows of gold, decorated chairs lined up, filled with two hundred guests. Colt pulled out all the stops. We had our club, plus the chapters from Grand City, Florida, Chicago, and Green Bluff in attendance.

It was a celebration, but also a chance to circle the wagons. Things were calm in Lincolnshire for now, but Tim Davis still wore the Chief of Police badge.

There was only one person not in attendance. Tara’s dad, Gavin Kimball, was in the wind. He’d taken the rap for Twomey’s death against my objections. It was his penance, he said. Or at least the start of it. Colt had a legitimate worry that Tim Davis’s reach might extend all the way to Detroit where Twomey had died. If it was me who pulled the trigger, even though it was self-defense, Davis might find a way to pull strings and jam me up for good. I reluctantly agreed. Now, not even Tara knew the full truth. Gavin wanted it that way too. He told me to tell her he was sorry and that he promised he’d never mess with her life again. For now, that would have to be enough.

“Is this the end of it, do you think?” Torch stood beside me. I’d asked him to be my best man. I held a folded piece of paper in my hand. Bailey had just brought it to me an hour ago. A wedding present, he said.

It was a court order, denying Christy’s motion for custody. The judge had taken his damn time making the ruling. With Twomey gone and extra heat from us on the Devil’s Hawks, I suspected Christy’s source to easy cash had dried up. It was good. Toby never even knew his mother was trying to get in my way.

As far as I was concerned, she wasn’t his mother anymore. My next request would be to see if we could get her rights terminated. Tara had already floated the idea of her trying to adopt Toby outright. I was all for it. With any luck, we’d be able to present it to him by Christmas. In the end, we agreed it would be his choice. But I had no doubt what he’d decide.

Tara was the best thing that had ever happened to both of us.

I threw the court papers on the table. “I think we’ve earned just a little spot of peace for a while.”

Kellan, Colt, and Brax came in the room. They were standing up with me too. I wouldn’t have it any other way.

“Come on,” Colt said. “Today’s a celebration. No club business except for welcoming that lady of yours into the family official.”

I nodded. He held out his hand and I clasped it hard. He brought me in shoulder to shoulder.

“Wait until you see her,” Kellan said.

I slapped him on the shoulder. Outside, I heard the first few strains of the violins. That was our cue.

I walked out of the meeting room shoulder to shoulder with my brothers. They stood by my side as I waited for my bride to walk down the aisle.

Amy came first wearing the gorgeous red dress she’d picked out for herself. Tara insisted there wouldn’t be any cheesy bridesmaids dresses in the bunch. Next came Nicole. She and Tara had grown close over the last few months. Her friend Laney was next.

All the while, Kellan’s wife Mallory sang a powerful rendition of “Ave Maria” that brought tears to my damn eyes.

Then the crowd fell silent and rose to their feet. My heart clenched as my beautiful Tara walked toward me, a bouquet of red roses clutched in her hand. In the other, she held tightly to Toby. That had been her idea too. She wanted no man to give her away. She wanted my son ... our son ... by her side as we made a new family together.

She wore a tight-fitting, silky white dress with tiny straps on her shoulders. Her hair was piled high on her head with little white flowers braided throughout.

I could barely breathe. I said the words. I hardly remember touching the ground.

Then the preacher told me to kiss her. Her lips were soft and sweet. A tear fell down Tara’s cheeks. I wrapped my arms around her and dipped her low as the crowd let out a whooping cheer.

Then I reached down and swooped my son onto my shoulders. As I took Tara’s hand we faced the crowd.

“I now present the Smith family,” the preacher said. “Joseph ... er Joker, Tara, and Toby!”

Later, as the drinks flowed and Toby had long since been taken up to bed, I found Tara under one of the twinkling lights of the trees. She smiled up at me.

  “I love you,” she said.

“I love you more.” I slid my arms around her waist.

I spotted Colt up on the deck. He stood next to Sly, the California chapter prez, and Nash, from Florida. They were deep in conversation and Colt’s expression looked grim.

  “Is everything okay?” Tara asked.

I kissed the top of her head. “Everything’s perfect.”

And it was. Tomorrow or the next day, there would be a reckoning with Tim Davis, the Hawks, or whoever might come for us next. But tonight, I knew I could take on the world. Because whatever came for me, I was stronger now than I’d ever been. With Tara at my side, I’d already won.
