Swallow Lane (A Liars Island Suspense)

I sobered and looked at the man standing in the entryway, his white scrubs just as stark, bleak, bland, and empty as this room.

He held up a tray, one that held a small plastic cup, and a glass of water on it. The little cup held four pills inside.

  “It’s time for your medication.”

I looked over at the seat Johnny had been in, but he was gone. He was gone and he hadn’t even said goodbye.

“Talking to Johnny again?” the man in white said, as he stepped inside, closed the door, the lock engaging once more.

“He was just here,” I mumbled. I kept picking at the frayed edges of that blanket.

The man in white looked down at me with a clinical smile, picked up the plastic cup that held the pills, and handed it to me. “Medication time.”

I took it and poured the pills in my mouth, took the offered cup of water, and washed them down. I did this because then he’d leave. He’d leave and then Johnny would come back. And then I could be free.

I could have that comfort again.

  I can be home again.

And as he left the room the sound of crying and screaming, of shouting and laughter, came through. I smiled.

They were all insane. Locked in here because they’d lost their minds.

But not me. I was here to get better. And once I was I’d find my way again.

“You can come back, Johnny. He’s gone.” The silence stretched out. The loneliness. But I sat there. I waited.

He’d come back. Even if it was only to sit in that chair and smile at me.

  The End.
