“I don’t want to love without her.”
“It’s up to you. Pratt once told me something I never forgot. He has seen many people die. Once you’re dead, that doesn’t mean the end. That you are no more. What comes afterwards? We believe it is rebirth. And what we put in motion this life determines what happens in the next. It doesn’t matter whether you believe like us or not, Vinee. What does count for something is that you go on trying, hoping and looking for love with someone else. That matters. That is the greatest respect you can pay to her. Look around this bar, it’s filled with men who have stopped trying. That’s not you, Vinee.”
“You don’t understand, Manee. You just don’t.”
“Let me ask you this. Would she have understood what you are doing now? Would you want her to understand you in this way?”
“No,” he whispered. “She wouldn’t.”
“To come here is to turn away from who she was and what she meant to you. As I said, Vinee. It’s up to you to decide. Where to go, what to do, who to be with. No one will stop you or question you. That is the way things are in Thailand. But only you have to look in the mirror and ask where is the dignity in my life? Do I have the courage to let go and start again? Or do I just keep falling and falling?”
Manee stepped down from the bench and walked several steps past the platforms filled with naked girls. She stopped and looked back because there was something else she wanted to say. But she saw there was no need. Calvino was following one step behind her. On the way through the main entrance she noticed one thing that she told herself would stay with her for a very long time, something she told Pratt in bed that night: he didn’t look back.
When Pratt saw them coming toward the car he thought he saw something in Calvino’s face that suggested the beginning of a cure.
Calvino left the Zone.
Many others had left before, but they came back to dance around the mouth of the volcano, feeling the heat, the gravity, letting the Zone suck them back into ice. Somehow, Pratt had believed in connections to other worlds and, in one of those worlds, a girl named Mai was still working to change the forces of gravity in her man’s life.

Christopher G. Moore is a Canadian writer who once taught law at the University of British Columbia. After his first book His Lordship' Arsenal was published in New York to a critical acclaim in 1985, Moore became a full-time writer and has so far written 23 novels and one collection of interlocked short stories.
Moore is best known by his international award-winning Vincent Calvino Private Eye series and his cult classics Land of Smiles Trilogy, a behind-the-smiles study of his adopted country, Thailand. His novels have been translated into eleven languages. The Bangkok police already have a confession by a nineteen-year-old drug addict who has admitted to the murder of a British computer wizard, Ben Hoadly.
