“I’ll also teach you to float on your back. But before we do that, I want you to swim a little. You’ll just kick your feet, and that will move you through the water.” I demonstrated.
Twenty minutes later, she was crossing the shallow end on her own. “I did it!”
“You aren’t quite ready for the Olympics, but you’re getting there.”
Tears glistened in her eyes. “You’re a great teacher.”
I pulled her up against me. “I think that’s enough lessons for today.”
“Hank, I know it’s not easy teaching me. But thank you. It’s important to me to be able to get into the pool without you in case there was an emergency or anything . . . especially now.” She spun, pressed her back to me, and pulled my hand to her stomach. “You’ll have to read about how to teach little ones to swim. And we should consider fencing off the pool.”
Fireworks exploded inside my head. “Are you telling me . . .?”
Leaning against me, she nodded. “I am. I’m not far along, so I’d rather not say anything to others right now.”
“We’re going to have a baby.” I laughed and kissed her cheek. “Well, you are going to do all the work at this stage. I just—wow! A baby.”
She turned and circled her arms around my neck. “Thank you for forgiving me but mostly for loving me and for letting me love you.”
Instead of trying to explain how much she meant to me, I pulled her to my lips. Some truths my mouth couldn’t convey with words. Kisses, however, offered an entirely different vocabulary.
