The Siren Jewel: Spellbound Prison Saga

They let us say goodbye to Becky before her family came to claim her body. I still couldn’t believe she was really gone. Once her body had been taken away, Teal refused to speak of her. When her name was brought up she went into a trance like state and completely detached from the world around her. I worried about her and Flynn did too. He had gained some street cred and every pack wanted him now, but he didn’t let it go to his head, yet at least.
We were locked in our cells twenty hours a day and I was going stir-crazy. The four hours we got outside of that were mainly for eating and bathing, but one hour was set aside as free time. Our movements were limited, but at least I could see Teal and Flynn once a day. I was housed in a single cell now. No one could replace Lorelei and I made it very clear to The High Council that I would torment anyone they tried to bunk me with. The buzzer sounded overhead and my cell door opened. I didn’t move from the only chair in my cell and waited for the hall to clear. I played with the necklace at my throat that Teal had helped me cloak again.
Inmates filed out of their cells and walked the halls to their various destinations. Flynn appeared at my door and jumped up to the top bunk. We were now alone on the cellblock. I formed a ball of light in my hand and tossed it into the air. It floated along like a balloon and landed next to Flynn. He picked it up and tossed it into the air before knocking it back to me.
“I still don’t understand how you can do that. Everyone else’s power is more restrained than before and you seem unfazed.”
“I feel… unrestricted,” I said and tapped the ball of light back to him.
Teal fumbled in the doorway and Flynn tossed her the ball of light. She caught it in her hand and held it to her chest. Her face was red and puffy, but I wasn’t about to point it out. I didn’t want her going catatonic on me.
“Maybe you’re not just a descendant. Maybe you’re a Siren,” Teal said. “That would explain how you can still access magic when the rest of us can’t.” She tossed me the ball of light. “I literally can’t get any of my spells to work now that these new bindings are in place.”
I shrugged. Lorelei would have known what to do right now, but I didn’t have a clue. I just knew I was different.
“I’ll be whatever I need to be to find my dad.”
“Still no word?” she asked. I shook my head.
“Where do you think Evan went? I imagine him on a beach drinking something frozen,” Flynn said.
“Why something frozen?” Teal asked.
“You know. Because he’s always hot. Or at least he must be with all that fire in him all the time.” He smiled. I laughed and Teal even chuckled a bit.
“I think…” I started speaking when a flash of light blinded me from outside my cell.
A white portal sparked and opened right behind Teal. She jumped forward and fell into my arms. Flynn leapt from the bunk and stood in front of us, ready to fight.
The portal swirled and out stepped Evan. He smiled and his eyes were bluer than the ocean. The portal sputtered and sent sparks flying behind him.
“Nice to see you all alive.” He turned back to the swirling white mass and looked over his shoulder, locking eyes with me. “Well, are you coming or not, Little Witch?”

About the Author
Karri Roberts writes contemporary fantasy stories for the spellcaster in you. Karri spends far too much time daydreaming about magic, hidden worlds, and heroines who are still cookie dough, and just not quite done baking yet. (10 points to those who get the reference!)
She lives in Oklahoma, USA (6 points if you live OK too) with too many craft supplies, ornery pets (2 points if you have a pet), and her wacky family. She is a serial binger of TV shows she’s already seen (3 points if you do the same) and is the best procrastinator.
She also writes post-apocalyptic stories under the pen name Karri Kadin (1,000 points for having read a Karri Kadin book.)
P.S The points mean nothing but thanks for playing!
