The Graduate
“That reminds me, do you recall telling me about your feeling handicapped by your lack of an education?” ask Lucien.
“Yes I remember.” Mike said.
“Here is a thank you gift for the job you’ve done here.”
Mike opened the envelope and found a bachelor’s degree in marketing from San Francisco State University.
“Your classes and grades are in their records, there are even several professors that still remember you.” Lucien handed Mike a folder with a diploma inside. “Behind that diploma is one from Berkeley granting you a master’s degree in Business administration. The same thing applies to that, grades are on file and people remember you from when you attended there. One professor… Oh yes, a Professor Lira remembers you quite well. He recalls lunching with you on many occasions. You were also quite active in student affairs while you attended Berkeley by the way. Based on your success in business, I see no reason they would ever be doubted. And if they did, even the CIA itself could not find evidence to cast a shadow of doubt. Now you are free to go and pursue a career in the legitimate business world if you choose.” said Lucien, then he sat back and looked at Mike and smiled.
Mike Looked across at Lucien and said, “You offered me a job and a chance when I had nothing. You lavished rewards on me for just performing the job you had hired me to do. You have treated me like you treated Vincenzo, your blood. I would never abandon you when you still have tasks you need me to perform. I am yours to command as a father could. I may not be a Bassi by blood but I am a Bassi in my heart.” Mike said and taking Lucien’s hand he kissed his ring.
Clearly touched and impressed by Michaels loyalty Lucien cleared his throat and said, “Alright let us move on with business. The expansion will continue… Vincenzo will take over the firm when I retire within the next ten years as I have no sons. I need you to assure the stability of Las Vegas. And then you will initiate the expansion program.”
