“I think it’s romantic you guys want to be with each other the night before you get married,” Nikki chimed in, smoothing her hand over her growing belly. “I’m just happy my mom took the twins so we could come without them and have a romantic getaway before the baby comes.”

“What time does your guy get here, Violet?” Lara picked one of Brit’s many makeup brushes and toyed with it, looking at her reflection in the mirror.

Violet checked her iPhone to see if he’d texted her before his flight, then sat it aside. “After dinner. He had an important meeting, and it’s better this way so I have a date tomorrow but it’s not very overwhelming.” And it’d also be easier to explain it to Amanda. She’d told her she and Theo were friends, so her daughter wouldn’t think otherwise. Thankfully, the getaway got Amanda excited enough not to dwell on details too much.

“And his kid isn’t coming, right?” Brit asked.

“No, she’s at a sleepover,” Violet said. Marcelle had been excited to spend the weekend at her friend’s, and Theo had used that as reward since her behavior had improved at school.

Brit leaned closer. “Why don’t you have Amanda and Trevor sleep with Libby tonight?”

“And get in the way of your last night before the wedding? No.”

“Libby is sleeping with me tonight,” Lara said. “That’s part of my gift to the happy couple. You know, besides a kickass toaster.”

Violet pondered. Amanda and Libby were stepsisters and she wouldn’t mind spending time with her—Libby was in the list of her favorite people in the world. And Violet would love some alone time with Theo. She felt like she hadn’t seen him in ages, because it’d just been quick greetings as she saw him before her tutoring lessons. “I-I don’t want to give you more work—”

Lara waved her off. “Hey, if my running an unofficial childcare service helps anyone get laid, by all means do it. When these kids get together, they play with each other anyway so I don’t get to do much besides being the fun honorary aunt.”

Violet glanced at Lara, unsure if her friend was underestimating her workload or just being nice about it. “I’ll ask Amanda and if she agrees, I’d love that.”

Brit high-fived her. “Get yours, hot momma. You deserve it.”

Violet bit back a smile. Did she? She certainly didn’t deserve this amazing group of girlfriends who always had her back, no matter what. A jolt of happiness surged through her. “I’m so lucky to have you guys.”

Brit hugged her, and soon, Lara and Nikki joined them so they became a snowball of limbs.

A few hours later, Violet texted him.

  Did you check in?

Yeah. Flight got here a few min. early.

She slid her phone in her bag, and knocked on his suite. Being part of the wedding party, she’d access to the guests’ room numbers and decided to make him a surprise as soon as he arrived. She’d tipped the concierge to call her after he checked in.

He opened the door, wearing a towel wrapped around his torso. Hmmmm…

“Hey there, stranger,” she said, coming in.

He stepped back, taking in the maroon dress she still wore from the rehearsal dinner. It hugged her body, and had a slit on the front, showing her shapely legs. “You look stunning. Come here.” He pulled her into his arms, and a scent of soap swirled around her. She loved embracing him with his bare torso, his strong pecs rubbing against her clothed chest. What a magnificent man he was—and tonight, all hers.

He lifted her off the floor and she yelped, surprised. He carried her to the enormous bed. Heat flooded down her legs, adding to her growing arousal. The lights from the strip twinkled from the floor-to-ceiling glass wall. When he put her on the bed, she couldn’t care less about the extravagant view. “I missed you.”

  “Me too.”

He lowered his lips to hers and kissed her like they were star-crossed lovers reunited after months apart. His mouth explored hers, his tongue swiping over hers, provoking an adrenaline rush from top to bottom. Even though she lay under him, a part of her ignited, restless, wanting to take flight.

She lowered her hand, and got rid of his towel.

He flipped her around, and bunched her dress at her waist.

Desire dotted her vision, and she plastered her hands on the mattress, desperate to find some balance. He nudged her thighs apart, and ran his fingers into her entrance, making her cream on his digits. She moaned, her head bobbing forward as little beads of sweat formed on her forehead.

“Ass up,” he said, and pressed his strong hand on the small of her back, coaxing her into bending her upper body so her ass stuck in the air.

The submissive position sent a thrill through her, and she turned her face to the side, finding it hard to breathe. He kneaded her butt, warming her flesh until she undulated her hips, offering herself to him, and so very needy of his cock.

He positioned the thick head of his dick at the entrance of her sex, and without rush, moved it around, rubbing it and making her female essence drip from her pussy down her thighs.

God, she needed him. Needed him more than anything else right now.

Theo glanced at the sexy woman on all fours. His balls drew right up and full with a hot tingle threatening to drive him mad. He ran his fingers down her back, coaxing her to relax, and she dropped her shoulders, lifting her hot ass more. Her face above the mattress, hands side by side.

Earlier, he’d gotten the beaming approval from Arthur Fourton, the food critic who they’d been waiting for. He’d thought then that had been the best part of his day. Hadn’t he been wrong…

The second he’d seen Violet again, his heart hammered in his chest, louder than a lumberjack on a tree. The idea he’d have her for the entire night released something primeval inside of him, which he had to fulfill.

  He had to fuck her.

  Wanted.

  Worst of all, needed.

When he thrust more of himself inside her, a shudder rolled into his gut. He reached for her hair, his fingers trembling at the touch. He couldn’t resist, and swatted her ass, earning a moan from her. This woman wouldn’t be the death of him—she had the power of killing him and bringing him back to life all within one session of lovemaking.

“Violet… it’s been too fucking long, mon amour.”

She rotated her hips, pushing him to the precipice of an orgasm. “I know.”

In response, he grabbed a fistful of her blonde hair and tugged it, making her stretch her neck. He drooped over her, his breath fanning her ear. The scent of her feminine arousal filled the air around him, and he pushed it in, getting high on her. “Every time we fuck, I want to find a way to get closer to you,” he whispered. “To go deeper in you.” He kissed her cheek. “To fuck you harder.”

She let her pink tongue out, searching for his face, and he did the same, until the tip of his tongue stroked hers. She rocked her hips into him, deepening the penetration, and they both growled in tandem, as if that contact shocked them simultaneously.

He pulled her hair tighter, bringing her face closer to his, and caught her lips in his in a kiss that nearly destroyed him. Tongues meshed, mouths melded and he found himself withdrawing halfway from her to slide in deeper, over and over again.

He continued the sinful dance, retreating and thrusting, each time impaling her harder, so much their ragged breaths blended into one. A dark emotion lurked behind his heart, and he questioned why he’d come to care so much for her—in such way that being apart from her made his existence miserable. A force took over him, and he wrestled between the sex he enjoyed and the sex he shouldn’t enjoy—because that would always lead to her. His drug. His… woman?

“Don’t stop, Theo,” she hissed. “Touch me.”

He took her cue and let go of her hair to glide his hand to her sex. When he tapped her clit, to then roll his finger over it, he felt her contraction. Her sweat slicked back muscles stiffed for a moment, and in that split second, he flicked her clit a couple of times to drive her over the edge.

p; She called his name in a voice throaty, raspy and damn sexy, then convulsed, her body undulating under his, her limbs shaking, and breath labored. She glanced over her shoulder and smiled coyly, but the flicker in her eyes dared him to finish.

With his gaze fixed on hers, he placed both hands on her waist and he slipped out of her completely, his balls aching, his cock about to explode. Pressure built and grew until he could no longer take it, and he thrust into her one more time. Pleasure shot through him, from the very core of his being into her. A powerful energy spilled from him as he spurted his seed inside her, and felt more connected than he had ever been in his life.

Violet brushed her teeth violently, looking at her reflection in the mirror. For the past half an hour, she’d been throwing up. She’d popped her head outside the bathroom, but thank god Theo was a heavy sleeper, because he hadn’t moved from the position he’d fallen asleep in.

What the hell is wrong with me? Did the seafood from dinner not agree with her stomach? She leaned against the counter. She should feel a measure of relief, but her palms were still clammy, her forehead sweaty. She didn’t throw up randomly. In fact, the last time she’d thrown up out of the blue like this had been…

Her blood froze. When she’d gotten pregnant with Trevor.

  No.

  No, no, no—couldn’t be.

She had an IUD installed after Trevor had been born to avoid pregnancy. When was the last time I had my period? She added the weeks in her head. Officially, she was late—but not by much, and her period had always been irregular.

Her heart thumped, and she touched her chest, willing the mad heartbeats to slow down. Uncertainty grasped her throat like an invisible claw. She had to know for sure, so she could leave the worry behind and enjoy the weekend.

She slipped on her dress and shoes, grabbed her bag and tiptoed out of his room. When she made it to the lobby, she was about to leave but decided to check the hotel’s convenience shop first. To her surprise, the shop had a generous pharmacy type items, and amongst them was a lone pregnancy test. Of course. This was Vegas after all.

She paid for it, and went back to his room.

  Thankfully, he hadn’t moved.

She scurried to the bathroom, and took the test, then paced around the marbled floor. Surely, this would only be the evidence she needed to put the matter to rest and enjoy her time in Vegas. The chances of her getting pregnant were minimal. They were…

She picked up the test and widened her eyes at the undeniable second strip, flashing red.

Startled, she dropped the test, and gasped. Her stomach plummeted, and she picked up the tube again to make sure her nerves didn’t play tricks on her eyesight.

  Pregnant.

The word reverberated through her, a chilly sensation spreading fast. Pregnant.

God. What would she do? She resumed her pacing, running her fingers down her face in search of an answer. She couldn’t tell Theo about it—not yet. She had to digest the news first, pick herself up then share them with him. Preferably back in Tulip and not here. Being in her own turf had to give her a sense of security.

In this trip, Theo would already have to meet her friends, her ex, and accompany her to a wedding where her kids would be in tow. That was too much for any man, let alone one who had been honest about not wanting commitment. He was a good guy at heart, hence being her wedding date, but that was all.

Would she be able to raise this baby by herself? Doubts lurked, and the once airy, spacious bathroom seemed to close in on her, the space between the walls narrowing. Nervous, she took a few deep breaths.

She’d tell Theo after this trip—she just hoped she’d be able not to go crazy until then.

“Are you okay?” Theo whispered to Violet, after watching her serious stance for most of the wedding ceremony in a charming, elegantly decorated chapel.

“Yes,” she murmured without looking at him.

Theo drew in a breath, then looked at the happy couple getting married. He’d thought he and Violet had shared a wonderful night, making love a few times, always making sure she came. This morning, for some reason he couldn’t pinpoint, she seemed on the edge—more guarded, but when she spoke, a pang of uneasiness laced her voice. Very unlike her.

Could it be she was upset by the wedding? After all, her ex was with someone else. Maybe she hadn’t realized she still had feelings for him. Anger built inside, and Theo’s fingers curled into a fist. What kind of stupid man would divorce Violet?

An unsettling sensation stung him, and he shuffled on his seat. Unsure if he wanted to punch the man for making her feel that way or thank him for making her available to Theo, he cleared his throat. Now wasn’t the time to confront her—not yet. He’d observe her reactions when she interacted with Damian.

Was it even worth it bringing it up? He’d been honest about his intentions, and she’d been on board. He had too much on his plate to really commit to someone, even someone as wonderful as Violet.

Still, he placed his hand on her knee. She looked divine, wearing a cobalt dress that brought out her baby blues and flawless skin. Discreetly, she put her hand on his, then removed his from her knee.

Oh, great. Had he said something she didn’t approve? Obviously, something was wrong.

He sat quietly until the end of the ceremony. Perhaps she’d decided to end their affair—weddings had the power of seducing guests with the idea of a happy ending and some people bought into it.

He watched Brit and Damian leave the altar, followed by Nikki and Lara, the bridesmaids. He’d had a chance to meet Nikki and Brit earlier at lunch, in passing, and get reacquainted with Lara. They all seemed great friends, but he had no rapport with them to ask about Violet’s sudden change of mood. Besides, that was his problem to solve.

He nudged her elbow so they’d leave the chapel along with the other twenty guests who had flown from California to the event.

“Violet,” Lara asked behind them. “Can I ride with you to the hotel?”

  “Of course,” Violet said.

The drive to their hotel, where the reception would take place at one of the nice ballrooms, was longer than ever. Lara small talked and he joined in, giving an effort to sound interested and not too detached. Violet, on the other hand, looked out the window for the most part, barely adding a word or two to the conversation.

When they made it to the hotel, he opened the door for the women to get out. Discreetly, he nudged Violet aside and let Lara enter the ballroom. “Hey, we need to talk.”

Violet nodded. “Can it wait until after the reception? I want to talk to you, but if I skip the reception, everyone will notice.”

Skip the reception? What news did she have for him that’d make both of them go to their room? His gut clenched tighter. These weren’t his friends so he didn’t care about ruining their night, but she would. “Sure.” He choked out.

They walked into the area decorated with candles, sultry golden drapes and violinists on each corner. The atmosphere was intimate and romantic, but he could barely notice anything other than Violet by his side.

Brit and Damian stood, talking to a couple of people, when Violet greeted them.

“You look gorgeous,” she said to Brit. Then she turned to her husband. “Congrats again. Didn’t the kids do amazing?”

“Thanks, Mommy.” Amanda, who stood next to her dad, jumped and hugged her.

“And this is Theo Brodeur,” she said, gesturing between him and Damian.

Damian stretched out his hand. “Pleasure to meet you. So glad you could make it.”

“Thanks, and congrats.” He reciprocated the firm handshake. He’d expected to dislike Damian, but now, the look in the man’s eyes spoke of kindness. Besides, though he suspected, he wasn’t sure Damian was the reason why Violet had changed her mood.

Damian patted him on the back. “We need to get together sometime. Call Cole and have a drink.”

  “Sounds good,” he said.

  Violet
exchanged more pleasantries with Brit, then they found their seat and sat. Even though small, the reception had been carefully organized. The food served tasted exquisite, the music good and the guests, compelling.

Damian danced with his daughter, and also Brit’s daughter Libby. Violet kept Trevor with her at most times, unless they wanted him for pictures to give the couple more room to enjoy the party.

“Come here. I asked Lara to keep an eye on the kids while we talk,” she said after a couple of hours they had been there.

She took him to the winter garden of the hotel, a lush area filled with a Japanese flair and several cherry blossom trees making a circle. Thankfully, not many people were around them, most tourists opting to take pictures of the lobby.

“Shoot,” he said, perching his hands at his wait, unable to wait a second longer.

“I’m sorry I’ve been weird the entire day.” She glanced at him, threading her fingers together, then took a deep breath.

He stretched to his full height. “Tell me. What’s wrong, Violet?”

He chewed on her bottom lip. “I’m pregnant.”

His heart skipped a beat, only to resume a nanosecond later like it was about to part from his chest. “Pregnant?” he repeated, like he pronounced a foreign word for the first time. How could she be pregnant when she’d been on birth control?

She sat on a bench, regarding him. “Yes. I took a test this morning.”

“You told me you were protected,” he said, and a second later, hated himself for his accusatory tone. Emotions jumbled his mind, and he could barely focus. He paced in front of her, too restless to stay still. Did she lie to him? No, why would she? He brushed that bitter thought aside.

She touched her neck, her fingers tapping her skin. “I am protected. I have had an IUD for over a year, but somehow you broke through. I guess it’s not 100%.”

He ran his fingers down his face. “Fuck,” he said in a low voice.

She shot him an ugly look and shook her head. “I don’t expect anything from you. I’m telling you so you know.”
