He put it on the side table and went to take a shower.
The phone was chiming when he returned, clad in a fresh pair of jeans and a T shirt. Nolan stared at it in trepidation.
“Don’t use any technology that the State can use to track you,” Alexander had told him before taking away his phone. But if he didn’t answer, they couldn’t find him, could they?
The ringing stopped and Nolan picked it up, intending to switch it off and throw it away when it beeped once.
He read the message, heart in his throat. “I know you’re there, Mr. Patrick. If you don’t answer my call, you will not like the consequences.”
The phone chimed and he answered, heart hammering, mouth dry.
“Who is this?”
He asked, his voice shaking. Had he put everyone at risk with his thoughtlessness?
“Mr. Patrick,” the voice at the other end said. “I want you to listen to me very carefully. I know where you are, and if you don’t do as I say, you’ll find the Elite at your doorstep with the next flight. But if you do follow my instructions, there shall be no action taken against Ignis. Further, I shall ensure that your father doesn’t suffer either. If you do as I say, he shall be put into Cryo immediately.”
“I don’t think you have the power or authority to give such an assurance, whoever you are,” Nolan said, still shaky,
There was a laugh from the other end. “On the contrary, as the Supreme Ruler of Cynfor, I’m the only man who can give you that assurance. So, what do you say, Mr. Patrick?”
Nolan closed his eyes, and his legs started to shake. He sat down abruptly, as he processed what the other man—Thaxter—had said, and tried to examine his choices, but really, there was only one choice that he could make.
“What do you want me to do?” he asked.
