CHAPTER ONE:
I sat alone on the patio with an elaborately framed photo on the table. Joel and Martha. The previous owners of the house where I now resided with several beauteous and talented women.
The couple had done an absolutely fantastic job of preparing for the apocalypse. A secure yard with reinforced gates and barbwire along the top of the fence. A well-stocked pantry of food and supplies. Industrial water filters that could convert the nearby river water to drinkable was a huge plus in a world with no functional plumbing. With just the two of them, they could have lasted for a couple years on their own. If only the wife hadn't turned sick.
On occasion, I envied them. Not their death, but their brief existence completely dependent on one another as the world around them collapsed out of view. They could have maintained a precious calmness despite the chaos taking place in the nearby populated areas. My post-apocalyptic experience was not nearly the same.
I started off alone, after the death of my parents and everyone else that I knew, scrounging for food and doing my best to secure an old beer store for a makeshift home. I was sad and lonely, barely existing. At those times a person needed to settle into a routine to keep their mind from focusing on all the negatives. Because the positives were few and far between. It was a level of misery that many could not endure. Hell, Joel had it better than me even after the death of his wife, and he still couldn't cut it. Suicide surely would look like the best option to many people.
When Alexa found me, we had a chance to be a happy couple just like these two. Or at least a younger, less prepared version of them. We tried to make that store a home, dragging furniture and comfort items from nearby houses. Though she was hesitant to get involved romantically at the beginning, I was more than ready for a long-term relationship. Just the two of us surviving whatever may come our way. We needed each other.
It was the militia that drove us from that home. And though I don't regret taking in Jada and Riley, things have gotten much more complicated since we did. If Alexa and I had left to find a better home earlier, we may have stumbled across this place or something similar. It could be just the two of us right now, living peacefully for years. Just like Joel and Martha had managed to do, for a while.
I loved all the women in my house, in one way or another. But they did bring significant drama into my life. My efforts to help a couple skanks also sent me down a path of avoidable challenges. Though Hedy never recovered from her infections, Jamila healed to become a true treasure of a woman. And that led to many more of the sadly diseased females in the area clinging to us.
One house was no longer big enough. We had to take over the whole freaking neighborhood. Joel's sturdy privacy fence with the barbwire on top couldn't protect our growing community then. We had to expand our defenses, building a new fence from pieces taken from abandoned homes in the area. Then we blocked the entrance into the neighborhood to prevent another strike by the military group that had us penned up against the river.
Each step along the way I kept thinking that if we just do these one or two more things, we can finally settle in and relax. Reap the rewards of our hard work. But it just kept getting worse.
My morning meditation sessions used to help me focus on the future. I guess they still did. But I found myself reminiscing about the past much more often now. Simpler times, and short periods when we had a measurable sense of security.
I remembered that after leaving the beer store we were fortunate to find a nice place to live. Once I got the solar energy system working at the next home, I thought that was it. The hidden gun cabinet was a big plus. The ability to scare off intruders and do some hunting just made me feel more settled in. At that point it didn’t matter what else happened in the area, as long as it didn’t come knocking at our door.
Then we got some friendly neighbors. It was almost like society was starting to recover. Unfortunately, we were just in a tiny bubble of existence in a world that was still pretty fucked up. Infected people living like animals. Military forcing their will on others, taking what they wanted, killing those that didn't fit their needs. The bigger my extended family got, the more that we were noticed by others.
So, that is how I got here. Sitting outside for some alone time, staring at a picture of a deceased couple, wishing I could somehow go back.
But how many things would I actually change, given the opportunity?
Turn Jada away? No, I couldn't have done that. I don't regret that decision one bit. She has been instrumental to our security ever since she joined us. We wouldn't have survived this long without her. And I love her dearly, too. Our sexual encounters were unique and wonderful. Some of the best that I have ever had. Very memorable to be sure.
What about Riley? Well, of course I wouldn't want to reverse that choice. She's the glue that holds this ship together, doing whatever it takes to keep things running smoothly. Nobody, and I mean nobody, looks out for me the way that she does. She's my rock.
Stella? I'm definitely glad that she is part of my life. So sweet and unselfish. I couldn't wish for a life without her either. She brings a protective and caring side out of me that rivals with what only Alexa herself can do.
Bianka was my new best friend, and certainly the sexiest that I have ever had. I may have fucked that up royally, though, two nights ago. The sexual foursome that Alexa orchestrated was well intended but has likely formed a sizable wedge between me and the gorgeous lesbian that may never be removed. Still, I want her with us, forever.
Jamila was a very successful project, and then a link to drawing many more women to our cause. As much as I love that little spinner, ex-stripper in my bed, she may have been the only one that I could truly say was a mistake. Would I want to send her away now? Oh, hell no. She belongs as much as the others. But trying to help two salvageable skanks was the one decision that has led directly to my current predicament.
If it
weren't for the army of infected women assembling around us, the militia would never have come this far from the main road. As much as I hate to admit it, sometimes doing something good for someone else leads to more trouble than it is worth.
But I always end up conceding that I wouldn't have done things any differently. This is where I am. And this is where I need to be. Accept it. Make the best of it. And keep adjusting to adequately fill the role that my women have placed me in.
Once I get my head on straight, then I can deal with the challenges of the day. This was a daily undertaking that had become an important routine for me. Everyone in my household knew not to interrupt these sessions of solitude.
I stepped back inside of our house to find Riley alone in the kitchen, staying busy. She watched me like a hawk as I entered for two reasons. First, she worried about me. Though she couldn't read me like Alexa could, she knew what I had been going through. Second, she was ready to brief me on the day's projects and concerns once she determined that I was ready.
I gave her a weak smile then nodded. She knew what it meant. This was not the first day like this. And it most definitely wouldn't be the last. She took her job very seriously, even though it often meant handing me a list of unenviable tasks to do.
Riley then dropped what she was doing to bring her slim, pale skinned body to mine. Her silver necklace with my monogram dangling from it caught the light. Seeing it on display reinforced my responsibility to these people. A brief hug from the angelic brunette, a peck on the lips, and then a soul-searching gaze into my eyes. "Are you okay, dear?"
"Yes, sweetie," I replied. In Alexa's absence she had become my first wife in many ways. The way that she kept this fledgling colony organized she had risen to be my next in command in the eyes of practically everyone. Even the strong-willed Jada and Bianka tended to bend their ear when my Riley talked. As did I. "What do you have for me today?"
"Check in on Camilla this morning. She's been asking for you, of course."
"How is she healing?" I ask. A bullet wound is not something that a person can simply walk off. It is truly a shame that Corinne was killed weeks ago. Her mutant ability to help people heal would be a huge asset these days. She was also a good, strong woman.
"Alexa says that she'll be up and walking around in a couple days," Riley tells me. She seemed happy to share that news with me, despite any troubles that she has had with the voluptuous confuser in the past. I still remember the way that Riley rescued me from Camilla's power, while completely naked. That was a moment that I could never forget. It also launched Riley into the position that she holds today. Nobody jokes about her extreme devotion anymore.
"That's good news."
"Yes. And speaking of Alexa, don't forget to spend some time with her this morning. You know how she gets."
"Yes, I do," I reply making a wide-eyed face.
"Now don't say it like that," Riley chastised me. "She is doing quite well adjusting to her new role. You just need to give her positive reinforcement and keep making her feel special."
"She is special," I said with a sigh. It sounded worse than I meant. The expression had been ingrained in me from youth to refer to someone that was odd, and not in a complimentary manner.
"Yes, she is," Riley gave me a stern look. "In a very good way. After that, you should check in with Jada. She informed me this morning that the three army transport trucks are fueled and lined up on the street, ready for when you need them. I'm sure she has some other things to discuss. Protecting our perimeter requires more proactive decisions than I previously realized."
"I guess that is enough to take up my entire morning," I responded.
"No," Riley quickly replied. "Ling is waiting on your instructions for completing the fence project. She has really taken to the construction manager role that you assigned her yesterday. Don't avoid her for too long, either."
"You mean that she might go all Lost Ark phantom demons on my ass?"
"Positive reinforcement, sweetheart," Riley answered. "These women need to know that they are making you happy."
"Okay," I huffed. I thought that I was ready for the day after my morning meditation. Maybe I should have done the breathing exercises a little longer.
As soon as I stepped out the door, I saw smiles from the women that were going about their morning chores nearby. Suddenly, my job didn't seem that hard after all. No one challenged my authority. Discontentment was rare among my colonists. And, for the most part, the ladies did their best to avoid making things difficult for me. Add the flirtatious looks from attractive women and the fact that I had several incredible lovers, and overall, I had it really good in Dystopia.
I was nearly to the fence before I realized that I had forgotten to check in on Camilla. She was still spending all her time in the garage, which had been converted into a temporary medical facility. It should be a permanent set up if it weren’t for the fact that it was part of our personal home. Perhaps a building closer to the center of the compound would be better long term.
Jamila had already moved her things inside the house. Personal possessions were few these days. Gone was the time when a huge truck and a week of manual labor was required to move from one house to the next. I believed the tiny hottie carried everything in her arms in one trip to vacate the garage.
Alexa was sitting in a chair beside Camilla's cot when I opened the door. Her pastel colored clothing a perfect representation of her ever-cheerful personality since her return. The way she crossed her sexy legs at the ankle and turned her knees a few degrees to her left always struck me as flirty. Looking up at me through her lashes as she pulled strands of blonde hair over her ear only added to it.
Camilla's scar across her forehead was still a bit unsightly. She did, however, manage to put on a nice lace dress and brush her clean, bouncy brown hair. Someone must have helped her with those. Both beautiful, yet distinctly different women turned to face me, greeting me warmly.
"Good morning, Camilla. How are you feeling?"
"Worthless," she replied with a forced smile. Alexa shook her head as she continued checking the injured woman's pulse. Camilla had lost a fair amount of blood before she reached us. It takes time for the human body to produce more of its own. Blood transfusions were beyond our ability, of course. Maybe one day we'd get to the point where we can stock a comprehensive clinic and staff it with qualified personnel. Valuable medical equipment could be scavenged from nearby clinics and ran on solar energy as needed. Riley probably already had it on the project whiteboard.
"How is the pain?" I asked.
"Not too bad," Camilla replied. "If I lie still. But I'm getting restless, Mason. I need to be put to work, like the rest of your women."
"You are still a couple days away from moving around comfortably," Alexa tells her. "Be patient. You'll get your chance to contribute."
"I need to earn my M."
I gave her a puzzled look. When Alexa noticed, she offered an explanation. "Camilla wants a monogram necklace to identify her as one of your closest women. I assumed that she'll be staying here in the house with the rest of us, so I told Jamila that it was okay to find one for her. I hope that's alright with you."
"Sure," I replied. Camilla had been in an unusual position ever since I'd met her. First, she was a captured enemy. Then, she wanted to be part of my team, which included a strong desire for sharing my bed. That met with some heavy resistance from the others. When we swapped her for Stella to begin farming efforts, we knew that she would eventually want to return and pick up where she left off. Her willingness to be part of the exchange had earned her some points with the team, but then her absence negated much of that.
When Corinne, John and Nadia were killed, we happily absorbed Bianka and Ling into our clan. We already had full intention of keeping Stella when we discovered her sure shot ability. Camilla, though, was missing in action. When she reappeared as a member of another faction, things got even more confusing. Only Alexa's testimony of the woman's good
will toward our growing colony kept her in a favorable position in our eyes.
When the new schoolhouse gang led by Tamika got attacked by the Coalition, Camilla once again survived the battle. It was certainly something that she had a knack for, but it made some people wonder if they could ever count on her to have their back when things got tough. I could honestly say that it was a concern of mine as well.
Showing up on our doorstep, injured once again, we took her in. This time around she was welcomed back into the group. Surely some of the maturing that Alexa reported in the woman had something to do with it. But should I allow her to jump right into the close circle that I have developed? The rest of the women have come a long way in proving their worth to both me and the colony. What has Camilla really done?
As if reading my mind, Camilla said, "I don't want the necklace until I earn it. I need to get everyone's respect before I can feel right with it around my neck. That's why I'm eager to get out of this bed."
"What will she be able to handle work wise?" I asked Alexa.
