  CHAPTER EIGHT

  Seattle Reports and Articles

This is the Seattle Police report containing notes of the interview of Steve Burnham, who witnessed a man (Ted Bundy) in a leg cast and hobbling on crutches along the front of Greek Row at the University of Washington, only minutes before Bundy would encounter Georgann Hawkins as she was returning to her sorority house.

  Seattle Police Report

DATE: August 8, 1974, Rec. call 1900 Hours

  STEVE BURNHAM, Phi Kappa Sigma

DETAILS: Saw man described in PI article that continually dropped his brief case. Man had leg cast & crutches. Was helped by girl matching Hawkins description. Will be at frat house 1400 hours

INTERVIEW: STEVE BURNHAM W-M-21 Lives at 4711 17th NE., Seattle, Wash.

His girlfriend is Pamela Joan Meade. Pamela lived at Kappa Delta, 4500 Block on east side of 17th NE.

On Tuesday night, June 11. 1974 ay approximately 1130 PM to June 12, 1974 at approximately 1230 Am (close to midnig
ht) Steve took his girlfriend “Pamela” to Kappa Delta. As he was returning, he was walking northbound on the east side of 17th NE in the 4500 Block as he observed a white male 20 to 22 5’11 to 6” tall, narrow face, med. build 170 to 175 # dark brown hair down over ears hanging in a regular manner. He had no mustache, no beard, and no sideburns. His clothing was Levis (bleached), light colored shirt (short sleeves) and he had a slit in his pants up the left leg. He had a wrapping or bandage (cast maybe) on his left leg and just the toes stuck out and it appeared to be up to his knee. He was dropping his briefcase as he was crossing the street from the southwest corner of NE 47th & 17th to the southeast corner of NE 47th & 17th NE going eastbound.

As Steve cut towards the center strip of 17th NE and was about up to the suspect a white female came from the east sidewalk and assisted the white male. (Note the white male was on crutches of the wood type). He kept dropping a black or dark brown briefcase that had a handle on top. Since the female was going to help him Steve kept on going and crossed over to the west side of 17th NE and continued home to 4711 17th NE.

The female that helped the suspect was 5’3” med. build, dressed in pants and shirt (it was a warm night). Steve looked at the Hawkins photo and he says it was not her that helped him. The last time Steve observed the suspect was when the suspect was on the southeast corner of NE 47th and 17th NE and he was handling the briefcase. Steve Burnham seemed to be accurate with his descriptions and information. Note also that as Steve observed suspect on corner he also observed the female then going westbound on NE 47th from 17th NE alone.

The below excerpts are from an article from The Seattle Times describing a young girl who was murdered and decapitated in December 1974. This crime, of course, may not be the work of Ted Bundy, but the similarities with decapitation and the body not being recovered, should give one pause. If this wasn’t one of Bundy’s unknown murders, it clearly shows the work of someone just as diabolical.

The Seattle Times (Special to The Times), Tuesday, August 5, 1975, B16

EVERETT. A skull found under a tree near Paradise Lake Road Saturday night has been identified as Janna Marie Hanson, 13, of Montlake Terrace, who disappeared last December 26. Snohomish County Sheriff’s detectives were to return to a farm today where the skull was found. Police believed the girl to be a runaway. Mrs. Doreen Hanson, the girl’s mother, declared at the time of Janna’s disappearance that she would not have run away.

What follows are excerpts from the Seattle Post Intelligencer, dated Wednesday, August 6, 1975, which continues the search for answers into the murder of the Hanson girl.

  Seattle Post-Intelligencer, A 4F

Snohomish County Sheriff’s officers, aided by King County search and rescue teams, yesterday continued to search a 150-acre farm south of Snohomish. Meanwhile, yesterday, Capt. Nick Mackie of the King County Police who heads the investigation into the deaths of six Seattle-area women whose skeletal remains have been found, said his unit is not involved in the search near Snohomish. “At this point there is nothing that binds them (the cases),” Mackie said. Snohomish County Sheriff’s Officer Glenn Mann said the “only thing” in common between the Snohomish County case and the Seattle-area cases is that skulls have been found.

  CHAPTER NINE

Don Patchen Reports and Investigative Notes

In the summer of 2008, when I was nearing completion of my book, The Bundy Murders: A Comprehensive History, I traveled to Florida to interview retired detective Don Patchen about his role in the Chi Omega investigation. He graciously brought me into his home where we spent a good number of hours discussing his role in the case and going over his case files, in some cases including the original documents, that were housed in a large clear plastic container. Most of the material consisted of copies of the police reports and what you’d expect to find in such a collection of investigative material.

But when I came to a number of pages that contained what appeared to be hastily scribbled quotes that were placed in no particular order on the page – some centered on the pages, while others were tilted along the edges. Don told me this was from a time when Bundy had asked them to turn off the tape recorder, believing he could speak more freely to them in this manner. Unknown to Bundy, these notes and the information contained therein, would ultimately become part of the case the authorities would present to the court to bring Bundy to justice. What is exceedingly interesting about this is that Bundy actually believed these statements were “between them,” as it were and, because of this, he started speaking truthfully about his internal issues, albeit for a brief time.

Here are the statements Bundy made to investigators while the tape recorder was turned off. I have italicized Bundy’s statements and left the detective’s notes or questions in normal font so as to differentiate between the two.

I want you to understand me so you can understand my problem.

Fantasies equal problems. Started out: What turns you on? It has to do with fantasies.

He would never tell what they were. It has to do with voyeurism.

Y’all want modus operandi – I’m not going to give it to you.

He never enjoyed the act – but he had to do it to keep the fantasies up.

The act is a downer. What was the act – I’m not going to tell you modus operandi.

He would drink beer and start driving; he was having personal problems.

He counseled people. He had a greater problem he couldn’t take care of himself.

Sometimes I feel like a vampire; I never hurt anybody I knew.

Psychological block to never tell anybody, he wanted them to break him.

Girl on bicycle: I had to have her at any cost.

He talked about defense mechanisms. In order to live with myself. I have made defense mechanisms. The person you’re talking to could never hurt anybody. He convinced himself it was another person who committed these crimes.

What turns you on, hard pornography? No, soft pornography.

You’re going to have to help me break these barriers down.

He was a law student at U. of Wash. While everybody else was in class, he was a voyeur.

You don’t understand significance of Lee catching me & Utah case – you will when it all comes out.

Detective Don Patchen was lead investigator for the Tallahassee Police Department in the Chi Omega case. This deposition of him, taken at 2:00 p.m. on February 26, 1979, was at the insistence of Ted Bundy and was conducted by lead defense attorney, Michael Minerva. It is of interest to note that the Q&A goes into some detail pertaining to the above statements Bundy made, as well as additional damning statements he’d made that were now being used against him. We will begin at page sixteen and continue from there.

STATE OF FLORIDA vs. THEODORE ROBERT BUNDY

  Deposition of: DONALD PATCHEN

Q: In any event you did talk to Mr. Bundy beginning at 1:20 a.m. on the 17th?

  A: Right.

Q: And that was the first time that you interviewed him other than those contacts when his lawyer was there since the early morning of the 16th?

  A: Right.

Q: All right, sir. How long did the session take that began on the 17th at 1:20 a.m.?

A: It went throughout the night; it was after 10:00 in the morning I believe.

  Q: Who was present?

A: Myself, Chapman, and Steve Bodiford

Q: Did Captain Pottinger come to Pensacola?

  A: Yes, he did.

Q: During the time of that interview?

A: As far as I know, he wasn’t there when we started the interview. It was, I believe, the next day when we arrived.

Q: Was any of that session tape recorded?

  A: Yes.

Q: Was that session recorded with the bugged tape?

  A: No.

  Q: And there would have
been periods of time when the tape recorder was turned off, is that right?

A: At the request of Ted Bundy.

Q: Yes, sir, I understand that. Did you start out tape recording the session?

  A: Yes.

Q: Maybe you can help me here. I have this massive transcript here. Let’s go off the record.

(Thereupon, an off-the-record discussion was held.)

  By Mr. Minerva:

Q: Now, in the course of talking with Mr. Bundy there on the 17th, he told you some things that were not tape recorded; is that right?

  A: Right.

Q: Is there any way you can explain those to me in a narrative form, the essence of what he was talking about?

  A: I’ll try.

  Q: All right.

A: If I may see that again for just a minute?

  Q: Sure.

A: I want to see where we left off without re-telling parts of it.

Q: All right. You can hang on to that if you want to.

A: Okay. He had – I believe most of that was that he had talked about a few of his other adventures in some of these other states, as far as to some other cases, as far as his escapes and what have you. He went into telling about his voyeurism.

Q: Did he use that word?

A: Yes, he did. He went into telling us about some of his girlfriends, his past girlfriends and problems that he had. He went into – let’s see - he talked about when he was working for some representative, or someone that was running for office that he had worked with, and some of the dirty tricks played there. He went into talking to us about that he had wanted to tell us of the things that happened to him, but that he had had a mental block that pretty much restrained himself or brought himself to never be able to tell anybody. Uh – do you follow what I am trying to say?

  Q: Somewhat.

A: Okay. He kept telling us to keep talking to him, that this in essence helped him to come across with what he wanted to tell us. He at one point uh – I had asked him whether or not directly he had killed the girls at the Chi Omega house in Tallahassee, and he stated that if he was pressured into giving an answer that that answer would be no. And in that context of saying that, he would tell us that he didn’t want to lie to us. But again, if he was pressured into answering, he would have to say, no. Of course, he explained to us the facts that he had built up in his mind never to reveal certain information that he wanted to tell us but he couldn’t. He talked about, in his words, his VW that he had in Colorado, I believe it was. He used the word cargo, carrying cargo. He recalled an incident where he was riding down the street on a bicycle and he saw a girl, but that on this particular occasion he didn’t do anything to the girl, or anything at that point, but that uh – I don’t know exactly how to explain how he explained it. He stated that he had some feelings of the type that, you know, that he was controlling it at that time. In going over these feelings that he had, he stated that when he escaped from Colorado, that he felt that uh – this last escape that he had, when he came to Florida, that he felt that he could control his problem. And that having his psychology background, that he could be able to control his problems on the outside. And that he found out that he couldn’t control his problems, and in essence, you know, that more or less, scared him.
