7. Jack

  Jack loved making ice sculptures. He made ice statues of all of the animals and was especially good at bears. Jack believed all of his ice creations were the best, and so all were entered in Mother Nature's ice sculpture contests. But, Jack's moist cold breath on his creations left them looking white, almost milk colored. The others statues to be judged were all clear like they were made out of glass.

  The poor winners giggled over Jack's white ones and nicknamed him "Frosty."

  Jack lost every time and was not a good looser. In anger Jack always broke his creations and ran away from there. The only direction he could run away from the cold north was south where it was warmer. His running causes him to breathe heavily. Further south trees, tall grass, building, fence posts, and things soon looked frosty white like his ice statues.

  One morning walking out to the bus stop to catch bus 23 for another day in Mrs. Mussel's fifth grade class my grandson saw his breath and saw milky frost on things. He laughed and slowed to adjust his backpack.

  "Jack lost again," he said aloud to his slower following grandfather
