All the Tomorrows

  A man had come out of the bathroom, wearing just a pair of boxers and a surprised scowl. “Who the fuck are you? How’d you get in here?”

  I struggled to keep my fists at my sides and not in his face. “I’m Lauren’s boyfriend, that’s who the fuck I am. And I used my fucking key, because today’s the day I move in.”

  “Boyfriend? I don’t think so. She never said anything about a boyfriend.”

  Lauren came into the hallway. A man’s t-shirt fell halfway down her tanned thighs.

  “Right, baby?” he said.

  “Well, actually....” She bit her lip.

  “What the fuck, Lauren?” I stared at her, pleading for this not to be happening. Not another relationship ending this way. Not after I’d just given up everything in Kentucky for her.

  “So this guy is telling the truth?” The other guy stared at her too. “I don’t believe this.” He stormed past her into the bedroom, then stomped past me with a handful of clothes. “I don’t fucking believe this.”

  I couldn’t take my eyes off Lauren.

  “You can hate me, if you want,” she said to me as she fidgeted with the hem of her shirt. “I wouldn’t blame you, but he was just fun in bed. You’re the one I want to be with, Andrew.”

  She took a step towards me, but I shook my head.

  “I don’t fucking believe this.” I turned and walked towards the door.

  “If you’re leaving, can I at least get my key back? It’s a huge hassle having to make copies all the time.”

  “Fuck you, and fuck your key. After today, I am glad to inconvenience you.”

  I pulled her door shut behind me and calmly walked down the hall out to the parking lot; calmly pulled out my keys and carved “WHORE” into the driver’s side door of Lauren’s car; calmly got into my truck and drove off.

  I was in a new town, with no place to live and no job for another week. Just me and a cat and a trailer full of all my shit. What the fuck was I supposed to do now?
