CHAPTER ONE
Many years ago, small churches in towns all over the country were full of people every Sunday morning. There were farmers and butchers, hairdressers and gardeners, mums and dads and of course, girls and boys.
But as motorcars took over from horses and carts, the bigger towns built their own large, modern churches, and the little country churches slowly became empty and their walls crumbled down.
It was early this particular Sunday morning. An hour or so before, the sky had slowly turned from black, to dark blue, to lighter blue, then golden fingers twinkled over the horizon, and gently spread themselves through a very special garden, where, nestled in a secret place, was Honeysuckle Chapel, the most beautiful little Church in the whole area.
Honeysuckle Chapel had been standing in the same place for over a hundred years, and in times gone by, was one of those beautiful places that after a happy and uplifting Sunday service, overflowed with the sounds of children laughing and families greeting each other and catching up on the week’s news, sharing and caring.
But on this particular Sunday, all was empty and quiet in Honeysuckle Chapel. All that could be heard was a rather strange “snip, snip, snip” from nearby. Ah … the sounds of a gardener trimming her roses!
Hello Granny Love and welcome to this story.
Do you have a special Granny Love type of person in your life? Not very young, not really that neat – a bit extraordinary and very, very interesting. A person just like Granny Love – Sophia’s granny!
On this Sunday, as all was quiet and Granny Love was snipping the stems of beautiful blooms of roses for her kitchen vase, her seven year old granddaughter Sophia burst out of the Chapel door, an old and very intricately embroidered book cradled in her hands as she ran up the pathway.
There was excitement in every note of her voice as she cried out “Granny Love! Granny Love! Where are you? Your lost diary! I’ve found it, I’ve found it! Granny Love! Where are you?"
Sophia’s pale hair seemed to be woven from glistening spiders’ webs. It flew out and bounced off her shoulders as she ran as fast as the wind, throwing herself in front of her Granny, whose hands had stilled on the roses as she turned to face the onslaught that was her cherished granddaughter.
“Granny Love! I’ve found your diary!" the words stumbled out of Sophia’s mouth each word trying to get out first to tell the wondrous story. “It was hidden behind the altar at the front of Honeysuckle Chapel … Granny Love, your diary … your lost diary!” She bounced up and down in front of Granny then stopped still – the diary solid and real in her hands.
In her mind Granny Love whispered “after all these years … my lost diary! Oh my goodness!” Her happy face was mixed with shock, delight and excitement as Sophia gently handed her the prize, now making a statement not an exclamation.
“I’ve found it! Your diary!”
Snippets of memories started peeping into Granny Love’s mind as she stroked the old and beautiful cloth diary, turning it this way and that, before clasping it to her chest.
“Sophia, oh Sophia … you clever, clever girl!”
Granny Love was thrown back to a time, long, long ago, as she walked to a nearby chair that was waiting for her under a leafy green tree. She sat down, the pages almost opening by themselves, the sketches of fairies, the tiny words, the pressed flowers, all eager to be remembered by the little girl that once was, now the older Granny.
“Please tell me about the fairies again, Granny Love,” Sophia pleaded as she sat on the spongy grass at Granny Love’s feet. “Please Granny” she said again, as Granny slowly turned the pages of her lost memories.
“Just one story Granny, just one!” the little girl pleaded, and pulling the thoughts of her past back into the garden where she now sat, Granny closed the book and sighed, her eyes focussing on the insistent Sophia, so desperate for the memories to turn into words!
"A long time ago, when I was just a little girl like you, there were fairies living in the bottom of this very garden. Right here in my garden – in our garden.”
As she spoke, Sophia, breathlessly, chanted the words with her. She had heard the poem many times before!
“When little girls and boys are born all around the world, a fairy is born for every girl, an elf for every boy. They live right near the girls and boys and though they can’t be seen, if you feel a tiny whoosh of wind, you’ll know that they have been!"
Now if Granny Love and Sophie had been looking over towards the flower pot at that very moment, they might have jumped up and run towards the pot in amazement … or they might have just rubbed their eyes thinking there was a spot of dust in them. But they weren’t looking towards the flowerpot, so they didn’t see two tiny fairies, about the size of fairly big garden birds, suddenly appear, standing on top of the flowerpot, in a burst of magical falling stars.
These two beautiful fairies were dressed in everyone’s favourite colours. The fairy with the dark hair was dressed in pink – the prettiest ballerina shade of pink you’ve ever seen, but every single piece of her fairy dress seemed to sparkle like a million diamonds. This pretty pink fairy was called Rhapsody, and standing next to her was her very best fairy friend in the whole, wide world. With curly blonde hair and sparkling eyes, Harmony was dressed in a very, very beautiful purple fairy dress, with wings like the prettiest butterfly wings, only not quite as big, and sparkles twinkling from every part of her fairy dress.
Both Harmony and Rhapsody wore delicate silver masks with shining precious stones woven into the silver. The fairy masks matched their beautiful and magical wands, and both their masks and their wands glittered whenever they moved … and whenever they giggled, which was very often!
Harmony and Rhapsody watched Granny Love and Sophia for just a moment or two before they both giggled then twirled off the flowerpot and flew around the garden as they sang. You see, Harmony and Rhapsody sang most of the time because singing was one of their most favourite things to do … just like dancing and cooking and painting and … oh, so many favourite things they loved to do!
It's a beautiful day, dreams coming true
Our world is okay, when everyone's smiling at me
They're smiling at you, too
The air is so clean, the sun is so bright
A feeling of love, for everything in our world
Everything's alright
Happy within, I just want to shout
Smiles on the inside, smiles on the out
It's magic, a beautiful day
So perfect, a beautiful day
I want to smile all day
I'm going to smile all day
'cause it's magic, yeah yeah
It's a beautiful day
It's a beautiful day, our whole body's dancing
Smiles on our faces and smiles inside of our hearts
Everything's so fine
Happy within, I just want to shout
Smiles on the inside, smiles on the out
It's magic, a beautiful
day
So perfect, a beautiful day
I want to smile all day
I'm going to smile all day
'cause it's magic, yeah yeah
It's a beautiful day
As they sang, the fairies flittered here and there, stopping occasionally to wave good morning to a spider or to blow a kiss to a fluttering butterfly. Rhapsody sniffed a beautiful rose, then wrinkled her nose with a giggle before an “ah, ah, ah, ah choo” escaped in between her giggles and sent pollen skipping around the sky. Harmony and Rhapsody landed on a lily pad in a pond, then holding hands, they danced a quick dance 'en pointe' before flying off towards the magical mystery tree, a very large oak tree in the bottom of the garden.
The voices of Granny Love and Sophia grew softer and softer as Harmony and Rhapsody flew closer to the tree, and they quickly flipped and twirled to check they were alone, then when they were quite sure only the bees and butterflies and other fairylike creatures were nearby, they waved their wands at the bottom of the tree, just behind the yellow primroses, and a tiny door opened magically in front of them. A quick giggle, a twirl and a whirl, and the fairies flew through the door of the magical mystery tree and into Fairyland.
CHAPTER TWO
Minuet, the dancing fairy, was waving her magic wand and turning on all of the twinkling lights in Fairyland. As she pointed her starry-shaped wand at a flower, its centre lit up and it waved its petals, calling out “fairy hello, Minuet”. The pretty fairy pointed and stretched her toes hidden inside her ballet slippers, then began to warm up her fairy muscles as she giggled at two elf tots, curled up under a mushroom and yawning and stretching as they realised the new day had just begun.
Two tiny fairy tots skipped along the pathway through the flowers, and in the distance, Barnaby the Bizzy Buzzy Bee burst through the door of his bee hive, arms wide open in celebration of the sunshine and warmth! But wait, the sun must have been blinding as Barnaby ducked and dived at the piercing bright rays, then theatrically pulled a pair of massively big and funky yellow sunglasses out of his back pocket, and arranged them in a trendy and very cool way over his bee eyes.
Giving a hip shake of his head, the stripey bee jived his way into Fairyland … but something was not quite right! His senses into overdrive, Barnaby froze, then jumped out of the way just as a huge dewdrop splattered right in front of him from a leaf above. Giving a little bee smile of delight that he had been so clever to avoid it, he didn’t sense dewdrop number two that fell splat! Right on top of his head – bulls eye!
As Minuet watched Barnaby dance through Fairyland towards her, she saw him swing around a signpost where a dozen different signs were pointing in all directions. He could have chosen to visit the Snuggery or the Top of the Garden. Wizzle Gazzelles and Fairy Beach also had their own signs, but Barnaby seemed happy just loving the beautiful morning and dancing around the flowers.
“It’s a beautiful morning in Fairyland and I hear … I can hear fairy bells!” Barnaby announced to everyone who was close “Fairy bells! The Fairies are coming!”
And in a burst of magical sparkles, Harmony and Rhapsody appeared, shimmering like their very own daytime firework display. They giggled hello to Fairyland, then danced towards their friend. Well, really they walked, but when Fairies walk they walk so lightly, so delicately, they seem to be dancing all the time!
“And a bizzy, buzzy beautiful morning to you Harmony and Rhapsody,” said Barnaby with a buzz. “Another perfect day in Fairyland of course … is there any other kind of day in Fairyland?”
“Fairy hello, Barnaby!” Harmony and Rhapsody chorused together.
“Any amazzzzing plans for you today, fairies?” questioned their friend, rubbing his black bee hands together in excitement.
Rhapsody too was excited – so excited that she started flittering on the spot. Everything seemed to be jumping, her curls, her wand, her sparkling dress! “What in Fairyland was happening today?” Barnaby wondered to himself.
Rhapsody burst out with her news. “Oh Barnaby, it’s so exciting! I’m just sure something fan-fairy-tastic is going to happen today, and while I’m waiting there are flowers to dance around, rainbows to chase, birds to sing with ...”
Quickly, and with a bit of a worried look on his golden face, Barnaby stepped back in alarm as he noticed her fairy wings were quivering and shaking.
“Er … Rhapsody … something odd is happening … your wings …”
Rhapsody looked over her shoulder and giggled, then looked at her best fairy friend.
“Harmony, your wings are wiggling too!”
“There is quite definitely something magical in the air!” said the purple fairy, Harmony. “Look, it’s not just our wings that are wiggling – Beatrice the Butterfly’s wings are wiggling; the flower petals are wiggling … Barnaby! Even your antennae have started to wiggle!”
Barnaby looked left, he looked right, he looked up … he even bent down and looks through his legs, but he just could not see his antennae, because of course they were right on the top of his head!
“Hmmm fairies, I don’t think there’s anything in the air but another perfect day in Fairyland!” he commented in a very matter-of-fact, Bee voice.
Harmony wasn’t so sure. “Perhaps, Barnaby … but in the meantime there’s the snuggery to clean, songs to sing, dances to dance and friends to laugh and play with! And what about you Barnaby? Any beeeautiful plans for you today,” she giggled.
A quick tap of his toes and a two-step and Barnaby replied: “Fairies, winter is nearly over! Your wings are wiggling because spring will be here in the flash of a bees’ knees! The blossom buds are starting to burst! Not sure if anything special is happening in the Top of the Garden today, but I do have a whole team of young bees in training … you know – Bee Boyz, just itching to earn their Sweet Nectar Collecting Licenses!”
Brandishing one of those licenses for the fairies to see, Barnaby continued “So today’s a training day – but first, I can hear a grumbling ... and a rumbling.”
Harmony and Rhapsody looked this way and that and listened intently as Barnaby half turned away from them and started rubbing his tummy, chuckling like the funny bee he was.
“Grumbling and rumbling in Fairyland?” said Rhapsody. “Oh no, is it Wizzy the Wizard coming in to land?”
Barnaby’s tummy grumbled even louder but still the fairies didn’t guess. “Could it be thunder in the top of the garden?” questioned Harmony.
“Oh no, I hope it’s not rainy and windy in the top of the garden! That makes flying so hard!” said Rhapsody, who suddenly gasped. “Ooooh Harmony … perhaps it could be big people!”
But Harmony had heard the noise again, and giggled as she pointed to Barnaby’s tummy. “Don’t worry Rhapsody, I think the grumbling is coming from close by. It sounds like it might be time to visit our favourite pointy-eared friend, and the best cook in Fairyland … Elf the Fairy Cake Maker!”
Rhapsody and Barnaby agreed straight away!
“Oooh fun! He’s got a new menu at the flower pot café … I can’t wait to see what’s on it! Elf makes the best fruity-slushies ever!” Rhapsody gave little fairy jumps of excitement.
“Here’s hoping for honey-flavoured tricky treats … with extra honey!” said Barnaby, thinking of his grumbling tummy.
The Flower Pot Café was such a popular place to meet as it was right under the crossroads of the magical flight path. Everyone has to fly over it to cross from one Fairyland to the next.
“And maybe someone can tell us why our wings have the wiggles today!” finished Harmony.
“Let’s go fairies … come on, I’ll race you!” buzzed Barnaby as he ran off in between the Fairyland bushes at a hundred miles an hour. The Fairies giggled.
“We’ll give him a fairy-three head start!” said Harmony before they started to count out loud together.
“Fairy one, fairy two, fairy three … to the Flower Pot Café!”
Holding hands, the fairies twirled their magical wands
, and in a burst of stars they disappeared from Fairyland.
As the sparkles from their twirling wands bounced off the grass then disappeared with a ‘pop’, a Little Gnome appeared. He saw the sparkling dust and shrugged as he kept on walking, but a few steps later, quickly making sure nobody was looking, he started dancing some very funky hip hop moves on the flat fairyland grass, before stopping, dropping his shoulders then shuffling away.
If he’d stayed just a minute longer, he would have seen a fairymail fluttering through the flowers like a pretty butterfly.
“What’s a fairymail?” I hear you asking. Well, in Fairyland, mail is delivered by magic of course … it flies itself to wherever it needs to go!
CHAPTER THREE
In another part of the magical world, the same fairymail was now flying along a little lane that was edged each side in trees that were covered in pink blossoms. The fairymail flew past the signpost that read “Blossom Lane” towards a fairytale castle that was so beautiful and had such a magical look to it, it could only have belonged to one very special fairy – the Fairy Queen!
As the fairymail flew past a pretty window, it noticed it was open just a bit, so it turned itself sideways, and with wings gently fluttering, it shimmied its way inside the castle.
The Fairy Queen was sitting at a writing desk that really looked more like a flower than a desk … in fact, if you’d been able to get as close to the desk as the Fairy Queen was, you would have thought you could smell a whole bunch of flowers! Her beautiful crown twinkled like a million stars in the night sky as she watched the fairymail fly towards her and hover, quivering in excitement as it waited to be told of its journey.
“Hello my excited little fairymail friend!” the Fairy Queen said gently. “Thank you for coming to help me – the letter you will be delivering is nearly ready.”
Back in Fairyland, a pretty fairy called Tiptoe sat cross-legged on a mushroom playing a very happy tune on her flute, just next to Elf the Fairy Cake Maker’s Flower Pot Café. Three Ballet Fairies perched on mushroom stools around a leafy table, dressed in their fairy dancing clothes of leotards and leg warmers, with their ballet bags hanging from their chairs. Just like magic, the ting of a twinkly bell was followed by fruity slushies in strawberry cups appearing in a burst of stars on the table in front of them.
