Daughter Dearest

Page 24

by Nikki Bopp

Without hesitation, I walk directly up to Edward and wrap my hands around his neck and pull him down for a kiss, my mouth melding to his until we’re both breathless with desire. Only when we’re forced to split do I whisper the words, “I love you.”

Not waiting to see his reaction, I do the same to Daniel, and then Patrick, but before I can escape his embrace, he swings me around and pins me between himself and the wall of the kitchen.

“Not so fast,” Pat grumbles, eyes taking in all the flesh on display. “I haven't had the chance to say my piece yet.”

“I love you, Jenny,” the three executives proclaim at the same time.

  Epilogue

  Three years later

“Hello, my name is Jennifer Price.” Holding my hand out, I smile warmly at the young girl across the conference table from me. Dressed in an off the rack black pantsuit, her hair is curly and needs a good trim but the determination and drive in her eyes is something that anyone in business would be able to spot a mile away.

When she reaches into her bag to pull out a copy of her resume, I can't help but smile even brighter. Mia, now head of HR and already knowing what I'm looking for, starts jotting down notes on the notepad in front of her. Thankfully after getting rid of Nicholas, Mia decided to step up and take advantage of her Human Resources degree and completely turned around the department for the better.

“Hello Mrs. Price, my name is Farrah Williams. I am here to apply for the executive assistant position.”

“So nice to meet you, Farrah,” taking the resume from her, I look over the impressive list before setting it aside and asking the most important question that will decide if she will fit here at Price Research International.

“Why do you want to work for PRI?”

“Honestly, I think the job sounds challenging and would be right up my alley for expanding my knowledge base. I love the idea of helping those that aren't able to help themselves, as bad as that may sound, but this is my idea of helping to save the world. I love to learn, so this would be a new experience where I can continue to grow without feeling stale because PRI is involved with so many different things. I feel I would be an excellent asset to the company because I don't give up when I set my sights on something. I'm a go-getter and a team player.”

Clasping her hands together, Farrah snaps her mouth closed, her eyes jumping wildly about the room. Anyone can tell how nervous she is, and who wouldn't be when meeting with the CEO’s wife? Rather than answering right away, I simply stare at her, the tip of my pen tapping against my lips.

“Your answer was a lot better than mine was,” I finally reply with a chuckle, Mia scoffs and nods. Confusion slits across Farrah’s face, so I take pity and explain that before marrying Daniel, I interviewed and worked and PRI.

“Oh, wow. Yeah, that would be terrible!” She laughs, feeling more at ease now that she knows I'm not just some stuck up bitch. Of course, at that very moment, the door to the conference room is pushed open by a 7-year-old Eva who squeals and rushes around the table to throw herself into my arms.

  “Mom!”

“Eva! I'm in a meeting!” I let out a sigh, giving Farrah an apologetic look. She waves it away without a second's pause.

  “But I missed you, pumpkin.”

“Can we go play on the big swing?”

“As soon as I'm done,” kissing her on the head, I urge her towards the door. “Go find one of the Dudes.” The ‘Dudes’ as we like to call them in the office are of course Dan, Pat and Ed. At home, she's taken to call them Dad, but that can get kind of confusing, so we kind of give her free reign to call them whatever she feels most comfortable with.

“Sorry about that,” I apologize as soon as the door closes behind her. “She must have just got back from school.”

“Oh, it's fine. I've got one of my own, I understand.

“Well, I appreciate it. Normally I would ask some more questions, but I think I've got all that I need for now. We’ll let you know as soon as we have an answer.” Standing up, I offer my hand, which she takes hesitantly. Exiting the room, Mia laughs to herself and starts writing in her notebook, “You really should stop hiring people without actually talking to them.”

“I talked to her,” I gasp in mock horror, knowing she's totally right. What can I say, I've got a soft spot for single moms?

“There you are!” Edward calls coming out of his office and making a beeline directly for me. “How are you this morning?”

“I'm fine. How are you?” Wrapping my arms around his neck, I stand on the tips of my toes to reach his lips for a soft kiss. He hums a happy sound in response.

“I'm good, and, how are you?” His large hands cradle my growing belly, eyes shining with happiness.

“They're giving me the worst craving for pickles is what they're doing,” I complain, rubbing my hands along his. “I've already eaten a whole jar today.”

“I guess we’ll have to buy mommy some more then, won't we?” Patrick coos joining us, his arm settling around my shoulders. Mia rolls her eyes and waves her paperwork at me before trotting off in the direction of the elevator. I know she’ll take care of everything for me. I don't know what I'd do without her at times. She's truly a godsend.

“I hope this baby comes soon,” Eva comments, her hand tucked inside of Daniel’s. “Because I am sick and tired of pickles.”

“Me too,” Edward agrees in a mock whisper.

“Come on,” Daniel urges everyone forward. “Let's get home so we can swing before dinner!”
