Symbiosis

No air bled through the gap.

Only then did he notice the slight flicker of what looked like white static. A force-field? How was it possible to create a force-field that was almost entirely undetectable to the human eye? He had never imagined such a thing.

“Truly your power is great, Oh Lord,” Wesley said, repeating a catechism he had learned in church.

The other Wesley stood beside him with hands clasped behind himself, frowning as he stared through the window. “The next phase begins,” he said softly. “We have decided to afford you greater latitude.”

  Wesley noticed something.

A streak of orange light – no bigger than a spark rising from a campfire – making its way northward over the clouds that hid the Eastern Seaboard. “What was that?” he asked his master.

“The Leyrians,” his doppelganger replied. “Like insects drawn to bright light, they have been sending shuttles down to the surface.”

“And you've remained in orbit? What if they see you?”

The other man looked askance at him, an unreadable expression on that face. If he had not been frightened by the realization that he might have spoken out of turn, Wesley would have laughed. He had used that exact glare on so many of his subordinates. “Your species has a remarkable inability to notice the things that dangle right before your eyes.”

  Wesley swallowed.

As he peered through the rip in the ship's…skin, he wondered what would become of him. Somewhere down there, agents of just about every law enforcement department on the planet were looking for him. With the existence of the Leyrians public knowledge, he would be Public Enemy Number One on Earth and just about everywhere else in Leyrian Space. “I cannot go back,” he said softly. “They'll be looking for me now. I cannot serve you as I once did.”

His twin flashed a smile that made Wesley's blood run cold. “Other opportunities will present themselves,” he said. “The galaxy is vast.”

“Then my service is not at an end?”

The other man spun around to face him with arms folded, thrusting out a bold chin. “We'll be needing you a little while longer,” he said, nodding. “You are an important part of the computer.”

  About the author

The most important thing I can tell you is that I wrote this book while suffering from a severe visual impairment. At the age of thirty, I was diagnosed with keratoconus, which is a condition where your cornea is slowly warped. This led to some rather severe headaches and nausea; it took a while to learn how to adapt. This is the first book I wrote since being diagnosed with this condition. That makes it a real triumph for me.
