Much like many of us here, we all have history standing somewhere in this room with someone else. In Dominic’s case, Allegra has found him because some things never change.
“Your cousin is annoying,” I chastise. “She never let’s go of this baby thing. Even though, she’s knee-deep in her own kids. I’m certain it came from Eric saying we could be like the Kardashians with all the cousins.”
“Have you thought more about it? Is that what you’re saying?”
We’d had this conversation a number of times.
“I love our life, Noah. We are raising two beautiful children who demand our attention for different reasons. I’m not saying no, but not right now. I’m selfish and want you all to myself every other week when the kids don’t climb into our bed. Which I will admit is my fault.”
“I agree.” He grins, eyes twinkling as they stare back at me. “As much as I would love to see you carrying our baby, I love seeing you in the boardroom. You’re a force to be reckoned with.”
“We’ve got time,” I remind him gently. “Let’s not let biological clocks rule our lives and enjoy being us and the blessings we do have.”
“This is why I love you because you’ve made me see how great we have it. Let’s face it, the old Noah would have gotten hung up on what doesn’t matter.”
“See, I knew I was good for you.”
“Perfect, baby. Vous êtes parfait pour moi,” he whispers, his stare so deep it climbs inside my soul.
And with the words he whispers—how I am perfect for him—everything we are is exactly how it was always supposed to be between us.
Inside the arms of my husband, I take a moment to look around.
My friends who have become my family are dancing with their chosen loved ones. We’ve all come a long way, a different journey in which each one of us has ended up here.
Yet, across the room, the eyes of a scorned man have found me.
I chose to ignore him.
Let him deal with his own demons.
I owe him nothing.
Nothing whatsoever.
Everything I want is right here in my arms, and I wouldn’t change it for the world.
