Soul Taker
Page 13
Directly ahead of us, the exit came into view.
I swapped a glance with Father Cabrera. He had to be thinking the same thing I was. Would we cross that threshold only to rematerialize in the warehouse? Could we break Asmadina’s hold on us and conquer her infernal spell? The next few seconds would be telling.
Pushing all doubts aside, we shot through the doors, the sound of destruction growing deafening behind us. And then we were outside.
I held my breath, praying I wouldn’t find myself back in Asmadina’s realm.
After a moment, both Father Cabrera and I let out a deep sigh of relief. We ran away from the warehouse, trying to put as much distance between ourselves and that accursed place. I stole a glance back as we barreled toward the waiting BMW.
As I watched, the warehouse lit up with crimson light, the walls trembling and warping, and then the whole structure collapsed on itself as if had been caught in the gravity well of a black hole.
We all stared as magical power beyond human imagination erased the building from reality as if it had never existed.
We stood there for a long beat, the three of us gasping for breath and holding each other up.
The sky was a deep purple in the east, a fiery red in the west. Sunset, then. I had no clue how much time had passed while trapped in Asmadina’s house of horrors, but I was glad to feel the sun on my face, the wind on my skin. Glad to be among the living and not a permanent part of a collection of dead, evil things.
I wondered if Asmadina had survived her gunshot wounds and the collapse of her warehouse. Wondered how much time would go by before our paths would cross again.
I was itching for a rematch but also fearful of what the future would bring. A black magic practitioner that powerful—and insane—was bound to have a few more tricks up her sleeve.
And then my eyes landed on Vesper. It was a surreal sight to see her in the outside world.
Almost as if she knew what I was thinking, she flashed me a grin and said, “I think I might’ve earned myself a raise.”
I smiled back at her. Asmadina had pushed me to the brink, but her evil had allowed Vesper to conquer her greatest demon. Today, my assistant had become a full-fledged partner.
The legions of Hell better watch out. My paranormal investigation business had just gotten a serious upgrade.
Dark days might lay ahead, but I wouldn’t be facing them alone.
