Emily considered. “Depends on how strong you are, I guess.”
“Perhaps he will turn her. Make her strong.”
“She’s a child,” Emily said.
“Not such a child.” Vlad leered.
Emily flashed her fangs; she liked the way it felt. “Is that your insightful comment on the arbitrary age restrictions we like to place on our youth before we deem them ready to enlist, imbibe, or fornicate?”
“What we? You are no longer that ‘we.’ You are something new,” Vlad said. “To answer your question: I merely observe; comment is futile.”
“As is resistance,” Emily said.
“As, they say, is searching for a black cat in a dark room.”
“Especially if there is no cat,” Emily finished.
“Yet, there is always something to be found in the darkness,” Vlad said, as though that were the final word on darkness.
Emily supposed it was.

Anne Stinnett was born in Los Angeles where she spent most of her first decade reading books and playing in traffic. Eventually, she learned the foolishness of frolicking amongst moving vehicles, but she is still a voracious reader of multiple genres.
After growing up in California, she moved around a bit, eventually landing in Albuquerque. She graduated from the University of New Mexico, with a major in English and a minor in Theater Arts.
She now lives in Palm Springs, California with her freeloader canine friends Sirius (yes, Black) and Midge, who occasionally allow her to get some writing done.
