“They wouldn’t,” he drawled, and pressed another firm kiss to her mouth.

“They wouldn’t think we’re the type to run off to Vegas and get married, either,” she ventured.

He stilled on the bed next to her. Stared at her.

She bit her lip. “Too soon?”

He slowly shook his head, then leaned in and kissed her hard, again, and then again, as if he couldn’t believe she was in his arms and he needed to keep kissing her to remind himself. “I was just wondering,” he drawled, “how you’re going to pay for your half of the airfare.”

  She laughed.

He kissed her even more fiercely. “You want to get married?” he asked. “Really?”

She nodded. “But only if you want to.”

“Fuck yes, I do,” he said, his hands tight on her body. “But are you sure? You and Allan—”

  “We’re done.”

“No, I mean…you never married Allan? You were together nine years…”

She shook her head. “And you want to know what’s different now?” She ran a finger down his chest, then moved back up to tug on his dog tags. “He never asked. I was too stupid to figure out that he was just dangling the carrot. We only got engaged after he cheated on me the first time.” She shrugged. “So I guess I never married him because I felt that we couldn’t get to that point in our relationship.”

“And you’re there with me?” he asked, his voice thick.

She nodded. “What we have is totally different than what I had with Allan. I know the difference now. And I know that I love you and want to spend the rest of my life with you.” She ran her hands down his slippery back, and gave a light shrug. “But if you’re not sure—”

“I’m sure,” he said, and kissed her hard again. “But I must insist on making the cake.”

“Deal,” she said, and smiled into his eyes.
