The Pawful Truth

by Miranda James

I indulged Diesel a bit too much, probably, for several days, giving him extra treats and spoiling him even more than usual. I felt like I owed him my life. If he hadn’t attacked Dan the way he did, I think Dan might have broken my neck before Haskell could have stopped him. Diesel hadn’t clawed either of Dan’s eyes out, but he had left him with a badly scratched face.

Eventually, by the end of the week following my crazy stunt, as it would no doubt go down in the family annals, my loved ones began to thaw toward me. Laura brought baby Charlie over to see me, and Alex brought Rosie. I sat down in the living room, both children in my lap. Diesel sat on the sofa beside me, anxiously watching the babies. Laura and Alex faced me.

“Dad,” Laura said, “you have to be more careful in the future.”

Alex smiled. “We love you, and we know you too well to think that you’ll ever give up being nosy.”

Laura spoke again. “But you have these little ones who need their grandfather, okay? You have to be around for them, and for any others that come along in the future.”

“Deal?” Alex asked, one eyebrow raised.

Diesel meowed as I regarded my grandchildren. Around the lump in my throat, I responded to Laura and Alex.

  “Deal.”
