  “A little project of mine,” he said. “To be honest, all this business between us has put me in a contemplative mood. Been thinking about the old days a lot, recently.”

  He glanced at her, and a sly smile crossed his face.

  “It just may be that your dad’s inspired the both of us.”

  “Oh?” Kait replied. Then, as she thought about his words more, she added, “Wait, are you saying you’re going to come out of retirement?”

  “Not exactly,” he said. “But getting that file for you made me realize I can still contribute. And I don’t mean snooping around the records room. I mean something bigger, like in the old days.”

  “That sounds a little ominous, coming from you.”

  His smile widened, and he nodded. “Good. It should. With any luck, the Swarm won’t know what hit them.”
