Perry glanced at Pauline again. She lowered her head and gave a slight nod.
“I was wondering if you’d like to come work for me,” Perry said. “I can use a man of your investigative talents. I have a heavy criminal caseload and I employ eleven investigators. You would be the lead investigator and you’d get to pick and choose what cases you handle. No offense to Pauline, but I would pay you three times what the town is paying you.”
Pauline smiled to let Perry know she wasn’t offended, but I remained stone faced. I respected Perry, so I let him finish talking, but I wasn’t entertaining his offer—not even for one second.
“I appreciate the offer,” I said, “but I’m a cop, and I’ll stay a cop until I die or retire—whichever comes first.”
Perry sighed. He opened his mouth to speak, but I raised a hand to stop him. I’d seen something that needed my immediate attention.
“Excuse me,” I said. “I’ve got some business to attend to.”
Without waiting for a reply, I brushed quickly past them and hurried toward the western end of the park, where I saw two men heading for the parked vehicles. I walked briskly and gained on them in no time.
“David!” I hollered just as the men reached a blue Suburban. “David Monier, stop where you are!”
The two men stopped and turned to face me. I grinned inwardly when I saw the ugly mug staring back at me.
“What is it, Clint Wolf?” he asked sourly. I had heard that he’d been suspended without pay for thirty days and then transferred back to the road, where he stayed busy writing speeding tickets and checking wrecks. “You wanna gloat, is that it? Is this where you threaten to sue me for false arrest? Well, guess what? I don’t give a shit. I’ve already talked to a lawyer. I was only doing my job and there’s not a damned thing you can do. The judge signed that warrant, so I’m protected by qualified immunity.”
I continued walking until I was within a foot and a half of him. “I’m not the suing type,” I said quietly. “Now brace yourself.”
The wicked smile faded from his lips. “What’d you say?”
“I said brace yourself.”
David licked his lips. “Hold up a minute. You don’t wanna do something stupid that’ll get you hurt. I don’t wanna kick your ass, considering you’re still in recovery or whatnot, but if I have to, I most definitely—”
My jab shot out like a rattlesnake, striking him across the teeth and snapping his head back. He let out a startled yelp and stumbled backward. It was a gallant effort, but he couldn’t stay on his feet. He lost his balance and fell hard. I walked slowly toward him as he lay on the ground. It was a gratifying feeling, standing over him watching the blood leak from his nostril.
He propped up on one elbow and brushed a hand across his face. He stared at the blood and then looked up at me. “Jesus, Clint, don’t you know I can have you arrested for this? You can’t go around punching cops.”
Without saying a word, I leaned forward and extended my left hand. He hesitated, but then sighed and reached for it. When I had a firm grip, I pulled him to his feet and, using his forward momentum against him, I punched him as hard as I could with my right hand. There was a sick cracking sound as my fist smashed into his face. He collapsed into a heap on the ground, out cold.
“That’s for shooting my dog, you son of a bitch.”
