Accounts Payable Page 36

by Blaise Corvin

Since I’d honored my promise to Arren, I made a new one to myself as I stared at the moon. I promised I would live life to the fullest, and never let my heart grow hard, to ignore the people around me that needed help. No matter what happened, I vowed to never to be like Lisa. If this meant that I would have to go around pretending to be a hero for the rest of my life, so be it. Above all, I needed to live with myself. Thanks to Arren, I hadn’t had many regrets for a while, and I kind of liked it.

I felt like a huge chapter of my life had just ended, and a new one was right around the corner. One way or another, I was going to live life to the fullest, to be the best Nora I could be. I’d come a long way from a girl digging in the garbage for scraps, hiding behind refuse down the alleys of Bittertown, but I promised myself to never forget where I’d come from. My heart, damaged as it was, still existed because of all the people who had shown me kindness during the darkest times of my life. I owed them everything, and this meant that all the people in Mensk I’d saved owed them too. So many lives had touched mine, and I wondered how I would be remembered in the future too.

I had a big decision to make in the next week, but I knew that whatever I decided, I had value, and I could change the world around me. My friends and all the people who had encouraged me had given me a push, but the direction I’d taken, the pain I’d endured had been mine. I was willing to own that now, to take pride in it.

All the mistakes I’d ever made paraded through my mind, and I acknowledged them, but they didn’t crush me. Who I’d been in the past was not who I was now, but the lessons I’d learned had made me the person I was today. I vowed to keep learning as much as I could, now and forever, so I would never lose that pride.

I hoped my mother and father would be proud of me.

Yes, this portion of my life was over, but my adventure wasn’t done. With feelings of deep gratitude, humility, and joy, I began to openly sob. I wasn’t ashamed, though. Maybe being called a hero wouldn’t be so bad after all.

  About the Author:

Blaise Corvin served in the US Army in several roles. He has seen the best and the worst that humanity has to offer. A sucker for any hobby involving weapons, art, or improv, he’s a fairly hard core geek.

He currently lives in Texas with enough geeky memorabilia to start a museum.

Being a professional author, he must sometimes talk about himself in third person within author biographies.

It’s all very eccentric (and sometimes silly).

  Cheers!

  To Readers,

  PLEASE, PLEASE LEAVE A REVIEW!

You are wonderful and reviews are amazing for all authors, but especially indie authors like me. Your reviews help me pay the bills. Seriously. Don’t worry about repeating other readers, your review may be the one that someone else reads, not theirs.

If all you can think of to say is, “I liked this book, you should try it too,” that would be awesome!

A quick rundown I wrote of how reviews on Amazon actually work can be found here.

In 2016 I published my first book. Now I’m full time. This is pretty amazing, but also extremely scary. …lol. A lot of writers don’t admit to that. The uncertainty can be intense. Being a professional writer feels a bit like gambling during the first few years of one’s career.

The Artifice Universe is a part of something huge, a universe I’ve been working on for 10 years and can probably explore for the rest of my life. Nora has found her way into it through guts and consistently doing the right thing in spite of herself.
