A Moment in the Moonlight

  A snow angel.

A smile crept across her face. The first snowfall. Her snow angel had returned.

She sensed more than heard the approach of footsteps, and she knew it would be Harrison. Knew it. Felt it deep inside her. She turned her head.

He stood there watching her. “Snow angel?”

“Yep. Always the right thing to do on the first snowfall of the year.”

“Well, then, who am I to argue with tradition?” He dropped to the snow beside her, flung out his arms and legs, and scraped an angel into the snow. He left his arm outstretched, inches from hers.

She reached out farther and tangled her fingers in his. And just like Harrison’s grandfather had told him to never let words go unsaid with someone you love—because she did love Harrison, she knew it in that very moment—she turned her face to look at him.

His clear blue eyes were staring at her.

“Harrison, there’s something you should know.”

“What’s that?” His voice was low and hushed in the falling snow.

“It appears I’ve fallen in love with you.”

“You have?” A wide grin spread across his face.

Everything felt exactly right at that moment. She’d never been so certain of anything in her life. “I have. Definitely.”

“So, what are we going to do about that?”

“I’m thinking you should kiss me.”

Harrison stood and reached out a hand to help her to her feet.

“Then, I guess I should kiss you. If you insist.” He leaned down and kissed her while the snow drifted down around them in a perfect blanket of peacefulness.

He finally pulled away, and they turned to look at the snow angels they’d carved into the first snowfall.

He held her hand tightly in his, connecting with her, filling her with a contentment and peace that flowed through her. “Nora, you know what I’d like?”

  “What?”

“I’d like to be here to make snow angels with you at the first snowfall of every year.”

  “I’d like that too.”

And they sealed their hopes and dreams with another kiss.

  Chapter 32

Annie stood at Nora’s side, one arm gently wrapped around her shoulder. “Oh, Nora, you look beautiful.”

Nora looked in the mirror at the simple dress she’d chosen for her wedding—with Annie’s help, of course.

“Are you nervous?” Annie smoothed an imaginary wrinkle from the dress.

“A little bit. I’ve been single for a lot of years.” So many years. She and Harrison had hired Zach Berry to build them a new cabin on the property. Although she was sad to think of leaving the cabin she’d lived in for all so long, it was time for a change. A new beginning.

“Looks like we’ll both be old married women now.”

Nora was so grateful to have her friend by her side, as always. Traveling through life, no matter what changed, no matter what life threw at them, they were always there for each other. She gave Annie a tight hug.

“What’s that for?” Annie’s mouth turned up in a smile.

“For being my best friend. For being here with me when I need you.”

  “Always.”

Beth came hurrying into the room. She paused and stared at Nora. “Oh, Mom, you look beautiful.”

“That’s what I said.” Annie nodded.

“Oh, quit it, you two. You’re just used to seeing me in jeans and t-shirts.” She turned and took another look in the mirror. It was easy to see the years on her face, even with the touch of makeup Annie had helped her carefully apply. But she was fine with the few wrinkles and scattered gray hairs. She’d earned them. Each and every one of them. And none of them had scared Harrison away.

She smiled. Harrison. She was marrying Harrison. Today. Right now. Okay, maybe she was nervous.

“I’m just so happy for you.” Beth handed her a simple bouquet of flowers. “Cece said we’re ready to start whenever you are.”

“I’m ready.” She was. She couldn’t wait to walk down the aisle of the chalet and become Harrison’s wife.

Cece poked her head into the room. “All set?”

Nora nodded. A few moments later, the music started and Beth opened the door. She watched while Beth and then Annie walked down the aisle. Annie looked back and smiled at her.

She stood in the doorway. Her turn.

She was all set. Wasn’t she?

All of a sudden, a rush of nervousness surged through her. This was going to change her whole life. Everything familiar had been turned upside down. She paused in the doorway, sucking in deep breaths.

Then she saw him. Harrison. Standing at the end of the aisle, a wide just-for-her smile on his face. He held out a hand toward her as if he knew she needed his support.

And just like that, the nervousness faded, and she took a confident step down the aisle to Harrison, the man who she loved. The man who loved her—and she was certain of that. She wanted to share each and every day of the rest of her life with him. Her heart beat in a syncopated rhythm of happiness and joy as she walked down the aisle and placed her hand in Harrison’s.
