The Art of Murder
Page 26
There were plenty of people who knew Karen and Nick who were also selling their stories. Thankfully Jamie wasn’t one of them. But people were flocking to the bookstore, eager to see the woman who stopped the serial killer, the wife whose own husband had wanted her dead. It was irritating but it helped the business, so she couldn’t really complain.
Although, she did have another project on the go. She’d been inundated with offers to tell her story, initially from the media and then from publishers. Predictably, Peter Aronsen had come calling, offering to write the book for her. But Karen had decided to do it herself. It was time to start writing again. She’d come to realize that Michael was right. She was wasting her talent.
Between the interest in the store and the book deal, Karen wasn’t worrying about money anymore. Nor was she concerned about finding somewhere new to live. Nick wouldn’t be coming back, and, despite everything that had gone on in there, this was her home. She wasn’t leaving.
She thought about everything that had happened. She was still processing. She couldn’t believe how close she’d come to death. Nor could she believe she’d been drawn in by Michael Fisher. It would take some time to get over, but Karen felt better than she had in a long time. Finally, she would have everything she wanted. She had the house, the business. Nick was out of her life. His parents were so disappointed in him.
And it had all been down to her. She’d done this. She’d stood up for herself. She hadn’t backed down.
But she couldn’t help thinking that a lot of it had boiled down to a mistake. A key piece of evidence had been finding Nick’s lighter in Michael’s house, proving he’d been there, that he knew who Michael really was. If Michael hadn’t come home when he did, she would’ve picked it up and maybe the case against Nick wouldn’t be so strong. But fate had intervened. Of course, she could’ve admitted that it was her who’d dropped it that day.
But why would she do that?
