She started to pull away, but he hugged her tighter, keeping her in place.

“Yes, and I apologize. The mating fever took over, or I would have explained things to you beforehand.” He sniffed her hair and moaned. She smelled good enough to eat and he wanted her again. Kissing her neck and letting his hands roam her delicate body, he thought again, Mine.

“Wait!” She tried to move. “What mating fever? What are you talking about?”

Reluctantly, he let her go. He didn’t want to talk, he wanted to mate again. But looking at the female, he knew she would not agree.

Sighing, he began, “Among my people, there are times when a female can bring on the mating fever. That happened when I smelled you. I tried to stay away, but when you walked into the dining hall, I couldn’t control myself.”

Jakke watched her face turn from pink to red, eyes blazing.

“Let me get this straight, you had sex with me because of how I smell?”

Why was she angry? He hadn’t wanted to mate a Human, but when the mating fever hit, he had very little control.

  “Yes,” he replied simply.

“You jerk! So it doesn’t matter if you like me, you just like to smell me.”

“Female, you are not making any sense.”

“Sydney! My name is Sydney! Oh, God, I don’t even know your name for sure and I just had sex with an alien!”

She paced the room, clearly upset.

“Sydney,” he said, testing the name on his lips. “I am Jakke.”

She paused, shot him a look, then resumed her trek back and forth across the floor.

Jakke sighed, then climbed out of bed. As she paced by, he reached out and snagged her hand. She turned those dark brown eyes with flecks of green and gold on him.

“Calm down.” He smiled, but she didn’t return it. “I tried to deny it for a week, and it was driving me mad. I wouldn’t have lasted the next two weeks.” He entwined his five fingers with her four and pulled her down to sit on the bed. “The mating fever… I’m not sure how to describe it. I’ve always been told that it arises when we find the female with whom we are most compatible.”

  “But I’m Human!”

“I know, that’s why I have had such a hard time accepting it. We have two weeks to get to know each other, so why not enjoy it?”

“I would never sleep with someone I just met on Earth.”

“You are no longer on Earth.”

She knotted her hands together. “No, I’m not, am I?”

  Chapter 12

  Sydney

What was wrong with her? Sydney had just had sex with an alien, albeit it the best sex of her entire life. But still…an alien?

When she saw him in the dining hall, her mind had simply clouded with a lust-filled fog and all she could think about was ripping his clothes off. Her eyes roamed his sexy, muscled body before meeting that intense stare. The hunger she’d felt earlier paled in comparison against the raging inferno that licked the insides of her thighs in that moment.

Now that the fog had cleared, she was mortified. She had had sex with an alien man, and she had never even spoken to him before, didn’t even know his name. And now he spoke of a mating fever?

  What the actual hell?

She listened, grimaced, trying to make sense of everything.

He doesn’t like that I’m Human.

That irked her a little. Okay, a lot.

And then he reminded her that he was an alien, or at least not Human.

“We have two weeks to get to know each other, why not enjoy it?” he’d asked.

Sydney couldn’t take it anymore; she needed distance to think.

Enjoy it—as in sex. That sounded like every man she had ever met. And yet he claimed mating fever, destiny, that they were compatible…whatever that was supposed to mean! Again, it sounded like a line straight from the little black book.

“I would like to get to know you,” she finally, her tone cautious, “but we can’t have any more sex until I do. That’s not me.”

“How about an agreement, then?” he asked, eyebrow raised.

  She eyed him suspiciously.

“What sort of ‘agreement?’” she asked, her voice not nearly as controlled as she would have liked.

Hopefully he won’t notice my bloody hands are shaking, she thought angrily.

He stood, staring at her with hungry eyes. “The mating fever is still riding me heavily. You give me today and tonight, and I’ll give you the next two weeks.”

No! came her immediate, impulsive thought. What would everyone think of me?

And then her eyes slid to his rippling muscles. Abs of steel, arms like tree trunks, unbending and strong. She let her gaze drift to his large, erect shaft circled by hard ridges. Sydney shivered, remembering the pleasure those had brought…

He closed the distance, threaded his hand through her hair, tilting her face toward his. Lust roared to life and she wanted him more than anything in the universe.

Swallowing hard, Sydney tried to form a logical demand: “I’ll give you today and tonight, but then I want the rest of the time to get to know you. Don’t make me regret my decision.”

He hoisted her up in his arms, walking her backward toward the bed. “You will not regret it.”

His lips were soft and tender as his hands skimmed her neck, trailing down to her breasts, squeezing.

“These are so soft, so large,” he mumbled before squeezing again.

His lips moved over to her ear, whispered kisses down her neck until he sucked in her right breast, before moving to the other. When he finished, he moved even lower.

As his licked her nether regions, Sydney lost all sense of herself and let her body have full reign.

It’s only for tonight… she thought, and then her mind blanked out in ecstasy.

  _______

Hours later, as Sydney lay on her back panting for breath, she had to admit, “I’m done. I’ll be lucky to walk tomorrow as it is, and I’m starving!”

He grinned, kissed her cheek, and climbed out of bed. Sydney watched as he walked to a table on the far side of the room and poured something in a mug.

She sat up. “Hey, can I have a drink?”

He downed the whole thing. “You don’t want any of this.”

He underestimated her level of thirst at that moment. “I might. Let me try it.”

He poured some more and cautioned, “Just a sip,” before handing her the mug.

Sydney sniffed, then took a small sip. “This tastes like moonshine.” A giggle escaped before she took another drink. “It seems like a lifetime ago since I’ve tasted alcohol.” She laughed again, noticing a peculiar look on his face. She half grinned. “What?”

He shook his head. “Nothing, I’ve just never heard you laugh before.”

“Duh! That’s because you’ve known me for…” She pretended to check the nonexistent watch on her right arm. “What? Seven or eight hours?”

She laughed again, taking another drink. Everything seemed so surreal.

Drinking alcohol on an alien ship after having sex with said alien, she thought, restraining herself from giggling further.

Sydney handed him back the mug, knowing she needed food and something besides alcohol to drink. Already dehydrated, water or juice would be better.

As if he read her mind, he offered, “Shall we get dressed and go have a meal?”

And then reality smacked her in the face.

“I guess,” she replied hesitantly. “To be honest, I’m ashamed to face everyone out there.”

“Why?” He grabbed his uniform and stepped into it.

“Why? Because we have had sex all day, and I’m sure they know it. At the very least, they suspect. Hell, they tried to stop you! I was still coherent enough to see them chasing us and hear them banging at the door for a while, before they realized they were locked out and just gave up.”

She bit her lip worriedly, not wanting to face the knowing stares of alien male stran

gers, nor that of Takkeo.

“They would never do or say anything. You have nothing to worry about.”

Yeah, right, like that makes everything okay, she thought irritably.

But when her stomach let lose a ferocious growl, Sydney reluctantly crawled out of bed and slid on the jumpsuit, which she noted absently, was remarkably free of tears. Considering how hard he’d ripped it off her earlier, she’d expected it to be shredded to ribbons.

It’s gotta be the alien fabric, she thought. Must be sturdier than it looks.

“Should we not shower first?” she asked.

“Why?” He smirked. “We will just get dirty again after we eat.”

Jakke held out a hand and Sydney placed her own in his. As soon as they stepped outside, several men pushed off from the wall. They took one sniff and then glared at Jakke.

Sydney brushed against his side, a little afraid of the anger that thickened the air, and stared straight ahead, cheeks flaming.

  Jakke

This Human, Sydney, amazed Jakke. Once he finally let go of the disappointment of mating a Human, he enjoyed every inch of her delicate body, many times over. Her creamy skin pebbled under his touch, her body matching his in both rhythm and desire.

Handing her Fire’s Breath, Jakke was certain she would spit it out or cough with the burn as it slid down her throat. But she liked it. No female on Azziar would attempt to drink something that strong. When he heard her laugh, something inside shifted and he felt…happy. And he wanted to make her happy.

  Strange.

She might not be Azziarin, but she was beautiful, and she was his, even if she did not know it yet. When he told her about the mating fever, he’d intentionally left out a few minor details about the first time he took her.

He also failed to tell her that she would never return to Earth.

After getting dressed, he laced his five fingers with her four and led her outside. The fact that Jakke wanted the contact left him somewhat baffled. Azziarins rarely showed affection in public.

Jakke knew the others would be waiting when the door slid open. Kavvan, Takkeo, and Rykker pushed off from the wall. Kavvan sniffed the air then shot him an angry glower. Rykker appeared disappointed. Takkeo, on the other hand, seemed to be concerned about Sydney.

“Are you okay?” Takkeo asked Sydney.

Her cheeks turned a rosy pink and she nodded.

Kavvan crossed his arms. “We need to speak to you, Commander.”

“Unless it is about the ship, I’ll be in my ready room in the morning.”

Kavvan shot him yet another angry, disappointed look before storming away down the corridor.

Rykker glanced between him and Sydney. “I guess you will not be needing this.” He held up the injector before securing it in his bag. “How do you feel?”

“Much better, but we need to eat.”

Leaving them standing in the corridor, Jakke led Sydney toward the dining hall. He could fell the trembling as she gripped his hand tighter.

It amazed him that she already leaned on him for support.

But Jakke knew that there would be very few males at this late hour; the dining hall was only one-third full. He heard Sydney’s barely audible sigh of relief, which turned into a gasp when everyone turned at once to stare at the two of them.

The smell of their joining hung thick in the air, along with her mating scent. There would be no doubt in anyone’s mind that she belonged to him, which was the real reason he’d chosen not to bathe before leaving his quarters.

Jakke escorted her to a nearby chair. “Take a seat, and I’ll get us some food. What do you prefer?”

“I like everything.” She shrugged. “When you’ve been without food for so long, you learn not to be choosy. You eat whatever you can find.”

Those simple words made his chest ache. For the first time, Jakke thought about Takkeo, and how he essentially described her living in abject poverty, but she fed him anyway. The image of her upon first meeting filthy, in rags, and the acrid stench which had initially repelled him now nearly broke his heart. She had suffered, and he suspected it was due to the Tureis and the war they had brought to her unsuspecting, primitive world.

Brushing the hair away from her face, he said kindly, “I will bring you something good.”

She smiled softly at him. “I’m sure you will.”

Jakke grabbed a tray and picked out some of his favorite foods, hoping she would enjoy them too. For some reason, it pleased him to feed her.

Walking back to the table, he set one tray in front of her and another for himself.

“This is delicious!” she said enthusiastically, trying a little of everything. She didn’t even seem to care about what she was eating, didn’t ask the name or what the ingredients were.

Jakke stared in rapture, watching the female that fate had chosen to be his.

“I am glad you like it.”

Jakke tried to eat, but he noticed all the continued stares and sideways glances. He watched her lips as she chewed, and the fever burned once again.

Jakke wanted—needed—to taste those lips, lick the creamy skin and feel her grip him after taking her hard.

Sydney glanced his way, chewing more slowly until she swallowed hard. Jakke noticed the lust clouding her own eyes. Her tongue darted out to moisten plum lips.

“I’m finished,” she said abruptly, her eyes fixed on his lips. Jakke wondered if she needed him as much as he needed her.

  Chapter 13

  Jakke

  “Let us go.”

He took her hand and helped her to stand. They took a brisk pace back, trying not to sprint. As soon as the door slid shut, Jakke turned, grabbed her waist and snapped her body against his. Staring into her eyes, his lips devoured hers, tasting and nipping.

Working quickly, he shoved her jumpsuit to the floor, his hand skimming up her hips until he cupped her large round beautiful breasts. Letting his hands roam freely, he moved to her backside, squeezing. Then he hoisted her up and carried her to bed.

For the next several hours, they feverishly tried to sedate the mating fever.

As she lay on her side facing him, hands tucked under her cheek, he stared at her exquisite and delicate face. Those large brown eyes held so much emotion, it made his heart swell knowing she was his.

“I can’t believe we’ve had so much sex and I still know nothing about you.”

“What would you like to know?”

She studied his face. “I don’t know. Why don’t you tell me what you want me to know?”

This was unfamiliar. Males and females didn’t talk to each other. And yet, he did as she requested.

  “Takkeo is my youngest brother.”

  Her eyes grew wide. “Really?”

“Yes. I nearly lost my mind when he was missing.”

“I’m sorry. I kept trying to think of a way to let his…your people…know, but I couldn’t talk to them. And after hearing rumors about what the gray—I mean, the Tureis— did if they caught women, I didn’t know what to do.”

  “Thank you for helping him.”

  “You’re welcome. But I almost didn’t.”

  “What do you mean?”

“I was scared of all the aliens.”

“Aliens.” He snorted. “And yet you did. Help him, I mean.”

She chuckled. “He was easy to help. He never complained, never growled or looked aggressive. I couldn’t turn away. I thought he was too young to be fighting.”

“He is. He went down to your planet without permission.”

She scoffed. “Figures.” Staring into his eyes, she asked, “What else should I know about you?”

  “Hmmm…. I have five brothers and a sister. I command this ship…”

“Seriously?” Her eyebrows shot up to her hairline.

“Yes.” He chuckled. “Now, tell me about you.”

She shrugged. “There’s not much to tell.” At his pointed stare, she laughed. “Okay. Before the attack, I work
ed as an emergency room nurse.”

“So you were a medical officer?”

She grinned. “Not exactly. More like a medical officer’s assistant.”

“And what did you do as a medical officer’s assistant?”

“As a nurse, I gave medicine, helped with certain procedures, bandaged wounds.”

“And that’s how you were able to help with Takkeo’s leg?”

She shrugged. “I did the best I could with the extremely limited resources I had to work with. Before the war, I could have done considerably more for him.”

“Takkeo said it helped reduce the pain. It was a primitive yet beneficial technique.”

The more Jakke learned about his Human mate, the more she impressed him. He enjoyed their easy conversation.

On Azziar, he rarely spoke to the females who lived with him. They talked to each other, but he never cared about socializing with them.

“I enjoyed going out with friends for drinks after a hard shift at work. You can only see so much trauma before needing an outlet.”

“And these friends and drinks were your outlet?”

“Yes.” She scoffed. “But I only thought that was bad.”

  “What do you mean?”

“My life was normal, or so I thought. I ate frozen meals, went out with friends, visited Mom and Dad every Sunday I was off work. I thought the things I saw in the ER, the trauma and grief…” She shook her head. “And then the Tureis arrived. They killed so many people. My parents died in one of the first attacks.” She sniffed. “They destroyed everything. I hid out and scavenged the area like a homeless person, always looking for my next meal. I don’t even know if any of my friends or coworkers are still alive…I don’t know anything.”

Jakke listened, the sorrow in her voice making his heart ache. As she described the current conditions on her planet, it made him wish he had visited the surface at least once. Jakke envied Takkeo and the time he had spent with Sydney. He saw firsthand where and how she lived.

That night, Sydney slept in his arms; such a simple act that made him feel closer to her. The next morning, Jakke woke with her head on his shoulder, her arm and leg slung across his body.
