  Introduction

"The mantra that you're given in Transcendental Meditation you keep to yourself. The reason being, true happiness is not out there; true happiness lies within." “

  David Lynch

Congratulations on downloading Transcendental Meditation and thank you for doing so.

Let me introduce you to Transcendental Meditation and its history dating back to the Vedic Traditions. As with all ancient practices, it has been around for thousands of years, but we are just barely scratching the surface of its benefits and uses. However, there is documented proof that with regular practice, it affects how your brain works.

So let’s talk about how it can work in your life. Celebrities are preaching about the effectiveness of Transcendental Meditation and how it is therapeutic in nature. This alternative therapeutic meditation is designed to help you with ailments, worry, concern, and so much more. It is something that just comes naturally. Transcendental Meditation has been helping people heal from addictions and ailments for several years. This book provides resources and key information on how to practice Transcendental Meditation and also ways to be certified to teach.

This is not going to be your typical, boring training manual. Instead, it’s more of a how-to styled book. First, it talks about how you too can practice Transcendental Meditation like the celebrities. Well, the first step is to jump straight into the meat and potatoes of this book. The second step is how to find a Transcendental Meditation training center. Third step, we discuss the origins of Transcendental Meditation, and how Maharishi Mesh Yogi was able to build such a following. Maharishi was the guru and mentor to The Beatles and the father of modern Transcendental Meditation.

Fourth step, it talks about how to incorporate it into your lifestyle. We include success stories from not only doctors but everyday people as well as celebrities. In this book, you will find that we have included quotes from some of the most famous people such as Oprah, Katy Perry, Russell Brand, and so many more. You will also learn how some of the oldest Hollywood celebrities have been using Transcendental Meditation to improve their focus, beat depression, and handle Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Would you be surprised if I told you Clint Eastwood practiced Transcendental Meditation?

In this book, you can read all about the celebrities that stand behind this amazing resource and the organizations that are bringing Transcendental Meditation to inner-city youth and teachers. You will also read about the collaborations that are taking place with military bases and VA hospitals to bring Transcendental Meditation to veterans and families. There are plenty of books on this subject on the market; thanks again for choosing this one! Every effort was made to ensure it is full of as much useful information as possible so please enjoy!

Chapter 1: What Exactly is Transcendental Meditation?

“It’s really good if you’ve had addiction issues,” said Russell Brand. Brand continued by saying, “Meditation is highly psychological, and very beautiful, and overwhelming, and real, and trippy!”

So what exactly is Transcendental Meditation? Transcendental Meditation is the process of meditating with a silent mantra. What is a mantra, and why is the mantra silent? Mantras are a keyword or a sound that helps you get into a meditative state of mind. Mantras help you focus your full concentration so that you can experience a sort of transcendent experience. To get a mantra, you have to go through a training program that teaches you how to utilize Transcendental Meditation, and in the training, they give you the mantra. The mantra you are given is a word or a sound that aligns with your natural vibrations.

Many use the Yoga word "Aum" or "Om" which is the word for silence. In Indian culture, the word "Aum" or "Om" is also thought to be the sound of the creation of the Earth. The reason that Transcendental Meditation utilizes silent mantras is to let you silently connect with the vibration of your inner mind. It also helps to allow the mantra to kind of repeat itself without effort, kind of like conditioning. Now I know this sounds weird, and you're wondering how that is possible. Later, in Chapter 6, we will discuss how you get training and learn to be a teacher of Transcendental Meditation. This is also how you receive your mantra from your mentor.

The key way that Transcendental Meditation works is simply by conditioning. Conditioning is programming of the mind and body. For instance, we learn as a child that fire is hot after being told over and over again, which is a prime example of conditioning. We are told the fire is hot, so we believe it is hot. Or we know that a flame is hot by an instance of touching it and conditioning our brain to know that it is hot. So in that instance, we touch it, it’s hot. We now know not to touch it again. Do you remember Pavlov’s theory about the salivating dog? Pavlov used bells to condition the dog to salivate at meal time. He conditioned the dog to be hungry when the bell rang. Well, it’s the same concept. By practicing Transcendental Meditation, we are programming our minds to have an alternative response to thinking. What I mean is that in those moments, when a thought presents itself, we have the option to react or not to react. Our first response would be emotional. Thoughts tend to trigger emotional reactions. For instance, when an actor or a
ctress needs to cry and make it look authentic, they trigger that emotion by thinking of a very sad time or event.

Or instead of emotion, we take action. What this means is that thoughts tend to trigger actions, sometimes beneficial, sometimes not. For example, you think about the dentist, and you immediately call to schedule your next appointment. These are actions triggered by thoughts.

So in Transcendental Meditation, the key is to have a thought and not react in either way; we are conditioning ourselves not to react. This is conditioned by returning to your mantra when in a Transcendental Meditation session, and your thoughts wander. This is a non-reaction to a thought. So, over time of repeating this same process, you are programming your brain not to be triggered by thoughts which decreases your stress levels. We all know that when stress levels are decreased, so are hypertension, heart conditions, and other health concerns.

By not dwelling on our thoughts, we don’t take time to think through our emotions, and we also don’t try to carry out actions. Instead, we just simply start the mantra again. This results in the long run to changing our standard reaction to condition us not to react. It’s a sort of a way to recondition ourselves not to be reactive to our thoughts. It also helps us not to be reactive to others' thoughts.

So think of the 20 minutes you are practicing twice per day as training for a sport or a recital. Have you ever tried to get better at baseball or singing? Maybe you want to be an amazing artist. In Transcendental Meditation, you focus on fine-tuning your practice by practicing twice a day for 20 minutes per session. So in the sense of conditioning yourself to succeed at singing or to not run from a linebacker that is charging you, it is the same concept of conditioning your mind for avoiding reaction. It takes practice and a determination to return to your practice twice a day consistently. It’s a sort of natural programming.

Now, let’s discuss the difference between Transcendental Meditation and other forms of meditation. In traditional meditation, you simply quiet and still the mind. But this tends to be super difficult for people. We have so much going on that we cannot fathom how to quiet the mind. In mantra meditation, you start by repeating the mantra out loud, then as you progress through the meditative state, you start to whisper the mantra, only to find yourself mentally repeating the mantra. Then, slowly you allow the mantra to repeat itself. Then, finally, at the end of the session, you are in a state of complete stillness. There is no longer a mantra; it is silent. However, in Transcendental Meditation, the mantra is already silent. It is stillness and peace. It is the essence of breathing without thought. The mantra is effortlessly repeating itself in your head without any effort from you at all.

Transcendental Meditation is a state of pure consciousness where your ordinary thinking is transcended. It's perfect stillness, effortless harmony, a place of rest, stability, order, and a complete absence of mental boundaries. Regularly meditating improves your health in so many wonderful ways. It can reduce chronic pain as well as many other chronic conditions. By regularly meditating, you can reduce anxiety, decrease your blood pressure, lower your cholesterol, and so much more.

Meditation activates different neurons per meditative practice. For instance, mindfulness increases the activity of neurons in certain emotional areas of the brain, and also the frontal regions where decision-making and functions are controlled. In Transcendental Meditation, it’s a more global effect; there are characteristic brain wave patterns that can be seen in many different parts of the brain. With Transcendental Meditation, you can experience the effects of the meditation long after the session. Regular practice of Transcendental Meditation has exhibited brain wave coherence.

Seasoned meditators, who practice daily for a long period of time, see brain wave coherence all day, and they see a frequency of brain waves in different parts of the brain working together. With all these neurons working in complete harmony, it’s no wonder that the brain is calm while helping the prefrontal lobe focus and be more consistent with decision-making. Transcendental Meditation also helps you to have better job performance.

Why is Transcendental Meditation so popular with celebrities, as well as non-celebrities? Why do you think some of the richest, happiest, and most popular people in the world are practicing Transcendental Meditation? Most likely, the reason it's so popular is that it does not require any strenuous effort. Many famous actresses and actors are practicing Transcendental Meditation because it is like a restful sleep or a spa day for your inner mind. It requires no concentration or contemplation. Because it helps treat acute anxiety, major depression, and bipolar disorder, it's like going to therapy, only free. It helps them connect to their inner self and transcend the anxiety and stress that comes with everyday life for them. It’s a gateway to one’s inner stability, true peace, love, and happiness. As Hugh Jackman says in this quote, “In meditation, I can let go of everything. I’m not Hugh Jackman. I’m not a dad…..……. I’m just dipping into that powerful source that creates everything.” He says, “I take a little bath in it. Nothing has ever opened my eyes like Transcendental Meditation has." He believes it makes him calm and happy. It gives him some peace and quiet in this pretty chaotic world.

In Transcendental Meditation, you just breathe normally and focus your attention on your mantra. Transcendental Meditation is the only meditative process that is absolutely effortless. What this means is that it is an effortless technique to recharge your mind and body without stressing over the process. You feel brighter with a much more positive state of mind. You have better brain functions. With reduced anxiety, you can handle things in life much easier. Your cardiovascular health increases and you have less of a chance of having a heart attack.

Transcendental Meditation is just a simple, natural way to improve your health and your mental state of mind. 20 minutes a day is all you need to control stress and anxiety, improve cardiovascular health, and achieve a greater capacity for relaxation.

The best things about Transcendental Meditation are that it is so easy for someone to start, and it is easy to do. There is no need to empty your mind which people so often find hard to do. We are in a world of go, go, go so stopping your mind from thinking is not easy. We are accustomed to thinking 20 different thoughts every second. How can we expect to silence the mind and slow the thoughts? With Transcendental Meditation, we do not have to, and that is what makes it so much easier than other forms of meditation. There are no mindfulness moments in Transcendental Meditation. There is no concentration needed, no controlling the mind, and anyone can do it even children with Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

Who can benefit from the practice of Transcendental Meditation? Everyone. Every single person can benefit in some way from the practice of Transcendental Meditation whether they are young, old, black, white, women, or men. Every single person will find a benefit in the regular practice of Transcendental Meditation.

Why do some people consider Transcendental Meditation a religious practice? Because, during Transcendental Meditation, you will experience an awakening of self. You will feel relieved of the emotional struggle from being burdened with stress and worry. You will connect more with your inner self and feel closer to a higher power whether God or the Universe. You may experience a release of dualism. You will feel liberated and alive in a whole new way.

You may even experience what others call Samadhi, a blissful state of relaxed harmony. Many people have described Transcendental Meditation like leaving this state of consciousness and floating above themselves, watching from the outside in. Studies have found that Transcendental Meditation is highly effective at relieving stress. And in that relief, you are at peace. It’s like a blissful state of harmony exactly like what you experience in Samadhi. Cameron Diaz speaks of Transcendental Meditation as something that helps her tap into something already inside of her. “........that’s you, in essence. That’s something that was super-empowering for me once I grasped that,” says Cameron Diaz when asked how Transcendental Meditation has af
fected her.

If you are struggling with creativity, take 20 minutes out, and try Transcendental Meditation. It has been proven to have amazing effects on your brain’s ability to think creatively, as well as clarity of mind, which opens our thoughts up to function more coherently. Those who use Transcendental Meditation have noticed more energy as well, which is another big positive for those who have suffered from low energy levels.

In the next few chapters, we will discuss the history or origin of Transcendental Meditation and its benefits. We will also go into detail on how you can be trained and receive your own personal mantra. But that is not all. Many people have amazing success stories from their use of Transcendental Meditation, and we will discuss some of those here. Not only will we talk about celebrities that have experienced success in their lives, but also, regular, everyday people like you and me who are experiencing success every day because of their practice of Transcendental Meditation. We will hear real-life stories of success from those that have used it from all walks of life, veterans, prisoners, children, the famous, the old, the young, men, and women. We will hear quotes from celebrities and non-celebrities, as well as ways to incorporate it into our lives.

As you have probably noticed throughout this book, we have quotes from celebrities, the Maharishi, Buddha, and regular people, as well as several doctors and psychologists that support the use of Transcendental Meditation. There is so much great information out there on Transcendental Meditation, and we have compiled many great success stories. We have also included stories of recovery and happiness from practitioners who truly believe Transcendental Meditation saved them. We have stories from children who use it daily to calm their minds, as well as from convicts who are trained in prison to use it for centering and calming them. There are overwhelming benefits to Transcendental Meditation practice so we included as much as we could.
