The Trouble with Hating You

by Sajni Patel

I’d like to thank the entire team at Forever for loving my book as much I do, for seeing its value, for supporting the characters and their stories and underlying themes, for never once saying a strong, opinionated female main character is unlikable but instead rallying her on, for not thinking that one Indian romance author on the list is enough or that stories about South Asians are niche. I’ll never forget that whirlwind Friday before Thanksgiving when everything happened so quickly and changed my career. I want to thank everyone for your overwhelming support and dedication, but especially my editors, Lexi, Amy, Leah, and Madeleine. I have been blown away by the welcome.

A lot of my creative aspirations wouldn’t be possible without a strong network of family, friends, and the writing community. I’m blessed by the bountiful love from my parents. Thank you to the hubs for being there for me, Parth, Rohan, Meet, and the “London Girls,” and for not dismissing this path as something silly and fleeting, but encouraging it, getting excited over it. I don’t come from a creativity-supporting community, but I am grateful for having family show their pride and excitement for my stories and never saying (and I’m pretty sure not thinking) that the creative path is a lesser path or time wasted. AKA: Why aren’t you a doctor?!?

A big shout-out to my bae, Lizet, and special thanks to Jocie. A gigantic appreciation for Christina, for reminding me that I’m “a motha-freaking unicorn,” ha! Thank you for many years of writing dates, listening ears, advice, consoling moments, and open hearts to Anna Banks, Marissa Meyer, Rori Shay, and Lish McBride.

Many endless thanks to all of the readers out there. You make the world spin with your insatiable love for stories. I sincerely hope that you enjoy this adventure with Liya and Jay and will join me for more wild rides in the years to come.

  About the Author

Sajni Patel was born in vibrant India and raised in the heart of Texas, surrounded by a lot of delicious food and plenty of diversity. She draws on her personal experiences, cultural expectations, and Southern flair to create worlds that center on strong Indian women. Once an MMA fighter, she’s now all about puppies and rainbows and tortured-love stories. She currently lives in Austin, where she not-so-secretly watches Matthew McConaughey from afar during UT football games. Queso is her weakness, and thanks to her family’s cooking, Indian/Tex-Mex cuisine is a real thing. She’s a die-hard Marvel Comics fan, a lover of chocolates from around the world, and is always wrapped up in a story.
