“I'm afraid so,” she admitted.
“Go and make it better,” Gertrude said, shooing her to the door.
Afiya pushed the door open and saw his almost white blond head bent over a document. “I asked not to be disturbed Gertrude.” His voice was gruff and Afiya felt her heart shift.
“It’s actually your wife.”
His head snapped up and she saw the raw emotion before he covered it up. “What are you doing here?”
She came further inside. “I owe my husband a huge apology.”
He didn't respond and she came further inside the room. “I've allowed what happened to me to color what we have and I want to make up for it, if you allow me. She stood in front of him and still he didn't say anything. “I love you Garrett, my husband, and I felt the hole in my heart after I lost our baby. You see, I blamed myself.”
“It wasn't your fault,” he said a little gruffly.
She got down on her knees in front of him. “I couldn't see that. I was so busy trying to make a home for us that I wasn't careful.” She reached for his work roughened hands. “Please forgive me darling,” she whispered. He moved then and pulling her up and onto his lap he wrapped his hands around her body. “I'm sorry you went through that.”
“We still have each other.”

Gavin Marcus King was born the following year on July third, weighing in at seven pounds six ounces. His proud father showed him off to everyone who came by to see the baby and a picture of the happy family was printed on the front page of the Roseville News. The mall had been opened in December and so far had been doing well. Garrett had insisted that his wife take time off when she reached her second trimester as her ankles had a tendency to swell up. The members of his club and their wives had visited for the official opening of the mall in December and had stayed there for a week.
Afiya went home the second day, with her husband tenderly securing his son in the car seat and making sure his wife was strapped down.
He'd hired a full-time housekeeper, plus a girl who came in to do the daily chores. “Outdoors?” he asked her as he took his son out. They'd stopped by the shop and stayed there for a little bit while Ingrid admired her grandson with his curly dark brown hair and hazel eyes.
“It’s so lovely out here. I think I would enjoy sitting by the pool.” Afiya leaned over to peak at her son, partially asleep in his father’s arm. “I think our son is out for a few hours.”
“I think so too,” Garrett leaned down and kissed his forehead. “I'll go in and put him down and then come back to sit with you.”
Afiya nodded and watched as her husband went inside. She felt a little sore still, but so happy that she couldn't contain it. She chose the lounge chair nearest to the pool and stretched out, watching the sunlight dappling the clear blue water. The sun shone on the flowers and the trees. The gardener was quite dedicated to his work and maintained the place every day. She looked up as her husband came back out and she made room for him on the lounger. He held the monitor aloft. “I think he'll sleep for a while.” He pulled her into his arms. “I've asked Ruth-Ann to bring us something to eat.” He smiled as she snuggled into his arms.
“Happy?” he murmured.
“More than I can ever express,” she told him huskily.
“Just what I was hoping to accomplish,” he told her tenderly.
Later that night as they stood looking at their son in his intricately made cot they held each other, giving thanks that they had found each other.
